This half-armour was made for the tilt - a popular pastime for noblemen in about 1600, involving combat on horseback. Only the upper part of the body required protection. The breastplate had an attachment for a lance-rest and a reinforcing plate (grandguard) for the left shoulder. Underneath the armour a soft arming-doublet protected the skin from the hard metal and also provided some warmth. The illustration shows Charles, Prince of Wales (later Charles I) wearing a similar half armour.
