Everyone needs to push back against AIPAC's language here. Anti-Netanyahu candidates are not the same thing as anti-Israel candidates. Netanyahu has done what Trump has not even been able to do--make himself and his country interchangeable. This is so dangerous for multiple groups.

Wanting Netanyahu shipped off to the Hague and Likud stripped of all power is not anti-Israel. Hell, I would like the same for Trump and the Republican Party. And I damn sure don't want to see America decimated. I live here. I'm trying to prevent the Republicans from destroying my home!
I've been beating this drum for over two decades: supporting Israel does not mean "whitelisting every single thing that the PM wants", and that AIPAC has been messaging exactly that for decades is a shanda on them and a shanda on our parents who know better.
I'm in full agreement, and I wish more American Jews had been paying attention to what AIPAC has become and who Netanyahu has always been.

Hey, here's a picture of the shits I have to give about you.
I read the NYT piece, and I am holding onto the words of a woman who fended off inappropriate advances from a 60-year-old Cesar Chavez at the age of 19. “It makes you rethink in history all those heroes,” Esmeralda Lopez said. “The movement — that’s the hero.”
I'm a cat person and on all my trips to Israel, there were A Lot of Cats there, even for me.
my understanding is that the British imported cats to fight the rats, but that might be a post-hoc explanation. forward.com/schmooze/129...
anyway, now I have to remind myself not to respond to posts like these by going, "are you fucking kidding me, if this was an actual practice there wouldn't be so many feral cats everywhere!"
And like many problems in Israel, the feral cat problem is actually caused by British colonialism...

You should not be proud of emulating J.D. Vance, no matter what things you righfully hate about the Israeli government.
Take some time to actually think about how what you say affects the world, instead of blindly repeating something that feels right.
what one Jew does is reflected on all Jews.
Goddamnit, I hate it when my childhood rabbi is right. Please stop spreading details like this, they come up in his Rosh Hashanah sermons and I have to explain to my parents that "no, my professor isn't an antisemite, he's just morally obtuse."
The only things that get burned on Lag B'Omer fires are kosher marshmallows.
You're committing the exact same fallacy that your ignorant redneck uncle does when he says all Muslims are terrorists.
You're taking one horrific incident and applying it to an entire religion.
You should be ashamed.
are you fucking kidding me?
did you get that straight off of 8chan, or was it a tumblr post?
You can be rightfully horrified by the actions of a far-right government without posting ludicrous bullshit about a holiday that does not, I repeat, DOES NOT require animal cruelty.
This is it. AIPAC is a shitty organization that has brainwashed all of our parents into not understanding that Israeli politics are nuanced and complicated and not just "support or be personal complicit in another Holocaust."
I feel like if I introduce two more people to this game that love it as much as you do, I should be granted entry to Paradise. <3
I'm sorry that his behavior wasn't sexy enough for you to understand the issue was not the physical acts.
I hope you never have daughters, and if you already do, then I hope that they will be able to find support far away from you.
As a UChicago alum, I disagree strongly. What you mean is "has no ramifications for me", which is different.
I think it was a significant ethical lapse of the kind that demonstrates he's vulnerable to exploiting his position of trust in selfish ways, but I think moreso it's important that men who behave this way lose things they want in order to enforce the social norm against doing this.
and deprive you of the joy of discovering them through a journal article on an obscure and no-longer-celebrated Jewish "holiday"? Never!
However, a hint for the inquiring mind: that passage gets brought up in @benjaminrosenbaum.com's excellent interactive novel "The Ghost and the Golem"!
Except it should. Except that he'd been teaching for over two full years at that point. Except that the papers he was writing to get tenure had major flaws in them. Except that he keeps running for office, any office, not with a specific goal in mind.
Another contemporaneous student in the math department says Biss invited his entire undergraduate class to a house party he was hosting, which is so unusual that it was the sole example of that kind of invitation he's received in 20+ years of being in math departments.
When I was a first year grad student (21 years old), a researcher who was over 10 years my senior groomed me as a mentor in exactly the way Prof Wachspress describes here and raped me
He's now a professor in my field who apparently participated in a recent coordinated harassment campaign against me
It's so incredibly disappointing that Daniel Biss, who had an affair with a student while he was a professor, has beat young and vibrant Kat Aboughazaleh instead of withdrawing from the race
He should not accept the nomination
I gotta love that being a Jew in the 21st century means immersing yourself in the intricacies of obscure Talmud passages and then going, "well, actually, I think the point of this line is that being boiled in semen is worse than being boiled in excrement."
Just because you consider something normal does not make it true.
you are trying so hard to normalize what happened to someone else because you don't want to deal with the implication that the professors in your life were also sketch as hell. That's not for you to do.
I'm done here.
I was punished for being a woman while arguing why he was incorrect, while my three male friends doing the same thing didn't even notice anything was happening.
It's insidious. It makes you think you don't belong, your place at the table only there because of the worth given to you by men.
Many years later, I was sexually harassed by a guest speaker at my UChicago masters program -- I don't want to talk about the details, but I talked to the (female) dean afterwards, and she explained how he was physically putting me in my place for having challenged him on an intellectual point.
I was a first year UChicago undergrad student in 04 and took Honors Calculus my first quarter, and interacted with a lot of graduate students in the program later -- I'm sure you and I never met, but I can completely confirm the atmosphere of a boys' club and the way women were just not present.
You are seizing on a corroborating detail of Biss as a means of undermining Wachspress's account, when he is actually affirming Wachspress's description of Biss's lack of judgment when it came to undergraduates.
No one cares about you here: you're inserting yourself in the narrative for no reason.
