Tomorrow at the LA Times Festival of Books, I will apparently be signing books as "Joe Pain," my actual Christian name. If you're around, stop by Booth 360, where I come full circle back to my roots, signing copies of Florida Palms.

No Pain, no gain.

Dear friends,
If you’ve read FLORIDA PALMS, please consider leaving a starred review or helpful sentence on Amazon, Goodreads or StoryGraph. The paperback version is due out in July, which I’m very much psyched about. Thanks in advance!

All the anti-war and anti-occupation protestors were right. All the far leftists were right. All the “woke scolds” and your friend who’s “too woke” were right. They were somehow even more right than they may have realized at the time. But really, it was always obvious they were right.

CrimeReads is a big deal to me. It's LitHub's sister publication that focuses on Crime, Mystery, and Thrillers, often with a literary bent.

Florida Palms took 20 yrs to write and publish. And I get to celebrate this with my mom in town. I'm so grateful.

If someone you know likes books, especially lyrical literary crime mystery thrillers, which isn't a real thing but IS what my book has been called in reviews, consider picking up a copy of FLORIDA PALMS, named as a Best Book of 2025 by Library Journal, which caters to, you guessed it, librarians

Looks like the Ukrainian translation of FLORIDA PALMS just dropped. How badass is that!

I love the cover: the wild colors, the exposed palms in their symbolic struggle with an unrelenting gale of adversity.

Thanks Family Leisure Club and S&S!

I’ve never owned vanity plates before but my book bought this car and put me on a nearly two-month roadtrip so hell why not.

The Thrill List: Your Passport to Pure Adrenaline | BookTrib. Jon Land’s The Thrill List delivers September’s smartest, most suspenseful reads: from cunning spies and wartime intrigue to twisted psychological thrillers and chilling horror. Every page packs a pun...

A book review wherein my writing gets compared to Elmore Leonard, Jim Thompson, Vince Gilligan, and Steinbeck.

To add something good to the world, I built a tiny library for the neighborhood. Now I just have to paint it the colors of my house.

There is no world in which it is normal for the president to publicly call upon his attorney general to hurry up and prosecute his political foes. It’s like the Watergate tapes but posted on social media. Let’s get a grip on what’s happening here.

Stephen Colbert: “Tonight we’re all Jimmy Kimmel…. With an autocrat, you can’t give an inch. If ABC thinks that this is going to satisfy the regime, they are woefully naive, and clearly they've never read The Children's Book If You Give a Mouse A Kimmel.”

Not really an overstatement to say that the test of a free society is whether or not comedians can make fun of the country's leader on TV without repurcussions.

THE BOOK TOUR ENDS
We left LA on July 25th, a couple of kids with a big blue car and a box of dreams. Actually two boxes. Tonight we returned, 47 days later, full of stories and irrevocable memories. Thanks everyone who picked up a copy of FLORIDA PALMS or came out to one of our many events!

I'm coming to St Petersburg / Tampa and will be reading at TOMBOLO BOOKS tomorrow Aug 18th and chatting with Shane Hinton. Everyone says this bookstore is incredible and the people I've met who work there have been nothing but the best. Very excited.

If you're in Florida I might pop up on your NPR station during "Morning Edition" or "All Things Considered" over the next week or so.

Or you can simply listen to my short interview here: bit.ly/NPR-Pan

Special thanks to Cathy Carter of WUSF.

I've been trying to get on Mitch Kaplan's radar for a while now. He runs the Miami Book Festival as well as the Books & Books chain of bookstores. Turns out he's a fan of FLORIDA PALMS. This makes me joyous.
