I really hope everyone at SXSW addresses this glut of AI slop head on. Listeners can't report these releases & it's such a pain in the ass for artists/labels/management to get these releases deleted. This shit needs to stop.

I avoided AI slop on Tidal for a while, but in the past two weeks I have seen clearly fake releases credited to Steve Swallow, Roy Haynes, Fred Hersch, Brian Blade and Marquis Hill. There seems to be no way to flag this or to hide it w/o hiding the artist entirely.
Shoutout to @jawnita.bsky.social whose brilliant review of DtMF in @hearingthingsco.bsky.social spurred me to check it out last year. From the opening El Gran Combo sample I was hooked.
Julianne’s review gave clues & context to everything that happened last night.
The same Trump administration that keeps telling people to go back to the “corrupt” and “violent” Global South keeps bringing corruption and violence to the Global South. The same Trump administration that keeps invading US cities and kidnapping people has now invaded Venezuela and kidnapped people.
Anita Anand’s statement which does not explicitly condemn the kidnapping of Maduro is noncommittal bullshit. If the Canadian govt truly supports upholding intl law it must name & condemn the crimes committed. Shame on Carney and his office for failing to meet the moment, once again.
Now past 10 AM, still no statement from the Prime Minister’s Office
Bolsonaro's 27 year, four month sentence begins today after he lost his final appeal.
Brasil once again showing the rest of the world how it's done – in music, snack food, futbol, and imprisoning treasonous presidents.
2 MILLION ballots cast in the NYC election, Mamdani winning well over 1 million votes. Stark contrast to Montreal’s abysmal voter turnout this past weekend.
Give voters something to vote *for* – platforms that inspire & policy that resonates – and we might actually show up.
On another topic entirely, tune into CKUT 90.3 FM tomorrow (Tuesday) from 3-5 EST for my tributes to Jack DeJohnette and Jim McNeely. If you miss it live you can listen on the archive at ckut dot ca
RIP Lô Borges (1952-2025)
I'm really curious if results would be different if there were mandatory voting in municipal & provincial elections, or if we actually can extrapolate properly from 30% of the population.
Expect a huge waste of money “auditing” bike paths (whatever that means), continuing endless construction & gridlock, and no meaningful solutions to the housing crisis or nightlife issues. #Montreal
Have we all memory-holed Tremblay & Applebaum or did voters just not live here at the time? #Montreal
Welp, I guess #Montreal really dislikes bike paths, huh?
I’m not surprised at the results, just extremely disappointed. I get it — people are disenchanted with the incumbent party so they just vote for the party that used to be in power before.
It doesn’t help that there was a convoluted registration system for the first time in my memory, and crowd control at my polling station was a giant mess. Voting federally at the same location was infinitely easier.
Re: municipal elections, I hope all my NYC friends vote Zohran. Not only cause he has an inspiring vision for the city, but also to serve notice to all cities (and the DNC) that having a platform to garner actual support - not merely to stave off an opponent - is the move forward.
If that’s the kind of city you want to live in, vote for Transition (or begrudgingly, Projet Montreal). Remember that Plateau borough mayor Luc Ferrandez was responsible for “Projet NOISE” & increased complaints which killed nightlife over the past decade.
When I moved to Montreal in 2002, it was the most affordable big city in Canada. Music wasn’t classified as “noise” — if shows or parties were too loud, we talked to our neighbours instead of calling the cops. St-Denis & St-Laurent were full of independent shops, restos & bars.
#Montréal: Rappelons que ce dimanche c’est les élections, c’est aussi le changement de l’heure et y aura une grève de la STM. Planifiez votre journée en conséquence et allez voter!
#Montreal: A reminder that Sunday is election day. It’s also time change day (despite the fact I recall Tonton Legault saying we wouldn’t do this anymore…) and the transit strike will be in effect. Plan your day accordingly to go vote!
Another STM strike to reduce Montreal bus and metro service from Oct. 31 to Nov. 28
Barring an agreement between the CSN union and STM management, maintenance workers will launch a new strike on Halloween night.
D’Angelo never hesitated in carrying the torch of Black Music. His selection of covers and references made it clear that Black Music is a continuum and he was yet another highly influential link in the chain.
A big part of D’Angelo’s legacy was surrounding himself with greatness. Dilla, Saadiq, Questlove, Roy Hargrove & Russ Elevado are huge collaborators & contributors to the memories we have of his music.
It's not workable but I would like to see every Liberal MP who stood and applauded for Charkie Kirk banned from the Liberal caucus.
Lifting the names of Trey Reed and Corey Zukaitis, two Black men lynched in the USA last night.
The Canadian House of Commons gave a standing ovation to someone who spent his life fomenting the types of divisions that lead to lynchings. If you think it can’t (or didn’t) happen here, think again.
RIP Hermeto Pascoal. I interviewed him (with his keyboardist as translator) a couple of years ago:

Two of my artistic beacons – Eddie Palmieri and now Hermeto Pascoal – have joined the ancestors. Part of me is shattered and sad, part of me wants to dedicate the rest of my life to living up to even the smallest percentage of their artistry.
Voa alto, campeão. Muito obrigado pelo som. This tune, without exaggeration, changed the course of my life.

Fate
It knocks me out every September when I am reminded that Sonny Rollins was born on 9/7, Wilbur Ware was born on 9/8, and Elvin Jones was born on 9/9. As a trio, they made my all-time favorite recording in 1957, “A Night at the Village Vanguard.”
