Our Derbyshire bells are just starting. However I have been spoilt this week in the south. Such a beautiful sight to see the blue smoke developing in the vernal green. Britain is home to almost half of the world’s bluebells, found in ancient or semi-natural woodlands, flowering in April and May.
Looks very likely to have just been a Caspian Tern thru off the Bill - huge (big as a Herring Gull in direct comparison) ponderous flight etc but just too distant to get any proper detail. Keep an eye out further up Channel!
Had our first Bee fly in the garden too .
An unusual bird for #WyverlaneNR @derbyswildlife.bsky.social this morning. A very tired Great Crested Grebe on the main pool found by Kirsten & @willowglass12.bsky.social #Derbyshirebirds @belperbirder.bsky.social @danmartinwildlife.bsky.social

Willow Warblers, 1st April 2026
Steady flow of mainly phylloscs through the mist-nets this morning - currently looking like it'll easily be the best flurry of the spring to date...not that that's difficult
The Spring soundscape this morning was dominated by Song Thrush 7 Chiffchaff 2 Blackcap down the lane. #WyverlaneNR @derbyswildlife.bsky.social #Derbyshirebirds 4 Mandarin 40 Teal 3Tufted 8 Shoveler 2 Oystercatcher Red Kite Buzzard Sparrowhawk @belperbirder.bsky.social @willowglass12.bsky.social
A map shows the migration of tagged Cuckoo Ashok from the UK to Africa and now back again, with the location pin showing him as in Spain. A headshot of Cuckoo Ashok features alongside the wording: First to arrive in Europe and the earliest ever date that one of our satellite-tagged birds has done so!
A new record Sahara crossing 🪶 Ashok is not only the first of our tagged Cuckoos to reach Europe this year but his arrival is also the earliest ever date that one of our satellite-tagged birds has done so! He crossed the Sahara, reached Algeria, then crossed the Med & arrived in Spain on 25 March!
So wool nest lining is in this year 😀
