Two kids heading counterclockwise on the green lake outer cycle track. One is older and cycling confidently, and one is younger and weaving left and right a bit with only one foot on a pedal as the other foot kicks off the ground. Paint and flex posts delineate the car lanes from the bike lanes, and one of the flex posts has been mowed down by a car. It's a perfect partly cloudy Seattle spring evening.
Homeward bound after a lovely evening at Green Lake
Nothing but a flex post and a prayer between my entire world and vehicle traffic
The 3yo is so close to properly pedaling!
(She switched to one of our bikes once we got to roads and hills, but the 8yo held her own all the way home to Ballard.)

But like our telescope facilities use multiple data centers?? I admit the word "responsibly" was doing a lot of heavy lifting in my post
A big part of that is determining the actual compute capacity we need for various purposes 🙃

If we're going to oppose harmful infrastructure I thought it might be gas stations, pipelines, prisons, heck even parking garages, not… data centers
I think it's important to learn to build data centers responsibly on Earth so billionaires don't pull some stunt like, I dunno, launch them into orbit

Oh nothing just dreaming of a version of reality where we could spontaneously hop on a train, maybe with our family cargo e-bikes, and go see the tulips as a day trip this weekend

I just got back from Switzerland where it cost about $47 to take the train about 40 miles one way (yes I just did 2 unit conversions). The ticket is A -> B and you can just hop on whatever train in a ~30 hr period that is going that way.

Traveling to new places is great
But have you tried returning to your city in one 33-hour spring day of perpetual sunshine after spending 9 of those hours behind a reclinebro while wine is spilled on your leg?
Our transit is so close to being good

Back of a Volvo charter bus that is painted something between orange and red and says "BlaBlaCar"
Well said, random bus at the Geneva airport, well said
Thoroughly enjoyed doing this trip with zero cars! I had a lovely time in Switzerland and am happy to be homeward bound

I found Bird bikeshares covering part of Lausanne, near where I'm staying this week, but better yet, I found an interactive map where locals complain about (and sometimes praise) bike infrastructure — some things are universal but also the bar is MUCH higher than it is in Seattle www.bikeable.ch/map

Artemis II Splashdown and Return - NASA
NASA's Orion spacecraft carried Artemis II Commander Reid Wiseman, Pilot Victor Glover, and Mission Specialist Christina Koch from NASA, along with Mission Specialist Jeremy Hansen from the CSA (Canadian Space Agency), and splashed down in the Pacific Ocean near San Diego, California, at 5:07 p.m. PDT, (8:07 p.m. EDT) on Friday, April 10, 2026. The Artemis II test flight launched on Wednesday, April 1, from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida to begin its 10-day journey around the Moon for scientific discovery, economic benefits, and to build on our foundation for the first crewed missions to Mars. NASA’s Landing and Recovery team and the U.S. military coordinated efforts to extract the Artemis II crew from the Orion spacecraft.
More of the crew images after landing on the aircraft carrier found here if you want to download them.
The smiles on their faces .... 13/10.

Hello from a train in Switzerland, one of dozens going to my destination today
This train has self-serve bike racks, indicated stroller boarding areas, some kind of dining car, a kid play area car(?!), and both lake and mountain views
The bathroom in my car isn't working tho, so, not quite perfect

This whole thread is the perfect live recap I needed to read when I found internet again — I'm so happy the astronauts landed safely, they had to plummet through a lot of crap in orbit, and lots of systems had to work perfectly 🥰
WE DID IT - despite everything

Screen capture from the NASA live stream during a CSA (Canadian Space Agency) PAO event. View from the inside of the Integrity spacecraft, showing four astronauts with very big grins and laughter all around.
Seeing the Artemis 2 crew's reactions on being asked about maple syrup vs. Nutella on pancakes is delightful!

Astronauts Dedicate Moon Crater to Carroll Wiseman, Wife of NASA Commander
"It’s a bright spot on the moon,” CSA astronaut Jeremy Hansen said, his voice breaking up, “and we would like to call it Carroll.”
The crew all shared a hug after.

There's not a direct AND flat route, alas
The route I will call Zoo Hill is one option
Stone to BGT is another
Overshooting north to 75th also works
Or try a bus 44 bike rack if your bike isn't too big/heavy like mine is!

View of the NASA livestream of the Artemis II mission. There is a box in the corner with a photo of a woman, with text: "Voice of Christina Koch, Artemis II Mission specialist"
"I had an overwhelming sense of being moved by the moon...it is a real place, and when we have that perspective and we compare it to our home of the Earth it just reminds us how much we have in common - everything we need the Earth provides, and that is in and of itself somewhat of a miracle."

NASA's Artemis II Live Mission Coverage (Official Broadcast)
YouTube video by NASA
I highly recommend putting this NASA #Artemis II mission livestream on and just leaving it playing as you go about your weekend. Live views of the spacecraft, occasional visualizations of the current config, views of the control room, space-ground radio audio. www.youtube.com/live/m3kR2KK...
