one of the ways the mid to late 20th century political world has distorted the historical memories of even sophisticated observers is in the idea that you can achieve major transformations of american political life through something like bipartisan consensus
Huge news: Jordan Acker, who infamously pushed state to prosecute UM student protestors, loses bid for re-election to UM Regents. The winner: Amir Makled, who provided pro bono legal support to those same UM students. Enormous victory for the Palestine/student solidarity movement.
Cover of Blackstar Rising and the Purple Reign: The Sonic Afterlives of David Bowie and Prince edited by Daphne A. Brooks. The cover features David Bowie on the left and Prince on the right both in different shades of purple. Between the two artists the title is written in a bold sans serif font in a gradient fading from orange to pink to purple. The subtitle is written vertically to the left of the title in yellow. The editor’s name is below and follows the same gradient of yellow to purple.

Condragulations to the winner, but man, that was one stale #DragRace finale. Our recap of the canned laughter and perfunctory staging:

Lindsey fought like hell against Cuomo and for Mamdani and was the first person I saw clearly explain ranked choice voting during the primary. She shows up at the rallies and marches I shoot and clearly gives a damn about this city. Not my district, but I'm keeping a close eye on this one!
@lindseyboylan.bsky.social is running for City Council in District 3. Not my district, but if it were, I'd vote for her. Here's a thread with some reasons why. (tl;dr: she shows up.)
John Roberts has destroyed the Voting Rights Act, ended affirmative action, implemented the unitary executive, used the shadow docket to further GOP interests, changed the first amendment to transform free exercise into religious supremacy, and end the establishment clause. Hubris all the way down.
The Bitter Kitten Movie Club: NOUVELLE VAGUE (2025). Unpacking the homages, references, and slavish recreations of director Richard Linklater's rapturous love letter to Godard's "Breathless"

Holy SHIT someone found the test pressing of Robert Johnson's Cross Road Blues and it is clear as a PIN www.openculture.com/2026/04/reco...
I appreciate this model for being a researcher so much. It's why I don't care if someone thinks I spend too much time on the impacts of my work or listening to what students and activists tell me are problems with higher ed.
Every billionaire who's conspired to violate the law and the Constitution with this regime -- their businesses get nationalized, their assets seized. They lose everything. Literally the rings off their fingers and the watches off their wrists get taken away.
Every single lackey who's carried out his illegal orders. Every single creep who's helped break the law by not properly releasing the Epstein files. Every minor functionary who's helped ICE and CPB violate the Constitution.
They lose every asset, every single dollar. Financially annihilated.
All of his businesses and property should be nationalized and dissolved and he should be stripped of literally every single asset and dollar. Put him in public housing and let him live off of whatever UBI the next Congress passes.
it is, among other things, incredibly striking to see that roberts was so solicitous of the burden the clean power plan might put on fossil fuel executives, when, a decade later, he is indifferent to the way trump’s moves have thrown hundreds of thousands of lives into turmoil.
Every college and university is trending in the same direction in ways students largely hate and pretending it is necessary to be ‘competitive.’
Incredible thread!
Yeah why would the Clean Air Act have intended to change how we generate electricity that's like totally unrelated
Add Roberts to the impeachment list
"Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to get through this thing called life. Electric word, life. It means forever, and that's a mighty long time. But I'm here to tell you there's something else: The afterworld. A world of never-ending happiness. You can always see the sun, day or night."
The Madonnaissance has begun! It took me a couple listens to get into the track but now I loooove it. It's not the first single, which I'd bet will be bigger and hookier. Instead it's the opening track, serving tantalizing come-with-me vibes. Headphones recommended.

Just heard a report in The World about Cape Town's Muslim community. (Dates back to the 1650s.) It was oppressed under apartheid & remains marginalized in democratic South Africa. Gentrification, a curse in so many places, threatens its literal centrality in a city it did so much to create.
Review # 13 of "Disability Works" is out in GLQ. A thrill to be reviewed by Rachel Corbman in this essay on Queer and Trans Disability History alongside Kunzel's fabulous "In the Shadow of Diagnosis" and Whatcott's "Menace to the Future" (which I look forward to reading!).
