Short term is normal and healthy and needed for housing mobility. Long term is more common than you think.

When corporations treat a basic necessity as another asset in their portfolio to manipulate their balance sheet, most things you would consider logical or ethical go out the window.

Constructive dialogue… I worked in corporate housing for years and I do understand quite a lot about how large housing suppliers operate and can use vacancies to keep prices artificially high while using the depreciation, maintenance, and loss in rental income as a deductible loss to offset taxes.

If we build 10k more units and they are set at “market rate” which is north of $2k for a modest 1 bedroom, and landlords can leave them vacant and write off the loss, you just have more housing no one can afford that sits vacant.

We have so many of these units on the east side right now

I don’t think she’s making her point very well. We need more housing but we also need it to be affordable or force landlords down to the true market rate. This should be done via vacancy taxes and closing loopholes that let landlords keep the units empty and write off the losses.
