🚨New paper out at Journal of European Public Policy: Do Europeans want tariffs? No!
Our conjoint experiments show that the mass public does not support tariffs, no matter how they are framed. Full paper below ⬇️
It was great to work on such a timely piece with a stellar team of co-authors ✨

Congratulations Diane, what a fantastic project and achievement!!
Does copying the radical right's "tough" anti-immigration rhetoric pay off? No! Our new pre print provides evidence that Starmer's anti-immigration speech did not benefit Labour - with important implications for mainstream parties across Europe. Thread below ⬇️
🚨New pre-print with @versteegenluca.bsky.social and @mtsakiris.bsky.social on emotions and polarization ⬇️ We often intuitively think that affective polarization (AP) is about strong negative emotions, e.g. fear & loathing. But how do citizens actually feel? Spoiler: not as negative as assumed!
‼️ There are a few more days left to apply for the PhD positions in my group at KU Leuven. Make sure to send in applications by July 4! 👇
If you’re a political scientist please consider joining @epssnet.bsky.social as a member to help support this new (not for profit!) organization and the next European Political Science Conference in 2026 in Belfast 👇
If that’s not in the budget: spreading the word is just as important 😊
Recs for #EPSA2025 schedule:
THU, 1.10-2.50, in 0A.05: I’ll chair a panel on conceptual issues in affective polarization, feat. @luismremiro.bsky.social, @mascakir.bsky.social, Mickael Temporão, @fghjorth.bsky.social, plus present work w @katharinalawall.bsky.social + @mtsakiris.bsky.social
It was great to speak at the launch of POAL - I shared some insights about negative partisanship, and how hostility in politics relates to women disproportionately dropping out of elected office. Thank you @miriamsorace.bsky.social for creating this space, excited for what's next!
Opportunity here for someone interested in campaign experiments within the progressive ecosystem in the UK. Some training in experiments/causal inference a big plus/stats background required. Also ideal for a recent graduate interested in PhD research afterwards: apply.workable.com/campaign-lab...
Had a great time in Boston giving a talk at Harvard Business School on gender and the radical right. Thank you to Laura Jakli for inviting me & for all the excellent conversations and questions! @vinpons.bsky.social @giovannifacchini.bsky.social
Hi could you add me please if there is space? Thank you!

With Trump's victory, the need for a fresh UK-EU strategy has never been more urgent. Check out my latest piece in the Conversation on "Bresignation" and how the UK can re-configure the UK-EU relationship: shorturl.at/VyDYw #polisky #UKEUReset
🌤️So is it all doom and gloom? No! While echo chambers polarize, even a half-an-hour conversation with people from the other party can reduce polarization. Interventions that encourage cross-partisan discussion, however limited, may be key to ameliorating partisan animosity. 7/n
We also show results by partisanship. These reveal that echo chambers only significantly increase affective polarization among Labour partisans. This finding may be explained by incumbency dynamics 6/n
We also find that echo chambers increase policy polarization. Being assigned to discuss in a homogeneous group, compared to a mixed group, entrenches partisans’ policy views. Conservatives become even more in favour of the policy, while Labour partisans become more opposed to it. 5/n
We find that being assigned to discuss in a partisan echo chamber, compared to a mixed group, increases affective polarization by around 5 points, or a quarter of a standard deviation.➡️ Echo chambers polarize! 4/n
We test the effect of echo chambers on polarization using a large-scale pre-registered “lab-in-the-field” experiment in the UK, randomly assigning partisans to discuss a salient policy issue in either a mixed partisan group or a homogeneous group 3/n
Partisan polarization is of increasing concern across the world. What causes polarization? We examine the argument that partisan “echo chambers” – people surrounded by likeminded partisans – fuel polarization 2/n
🚨Do echo chambers polarize? Yes! 🚨Very excited that our paper “The Polarizing Effect of Partisan Echo Chambers” w @sarahobolt.bsky.social and James Tilley has been published FirstView at APSR! Link: www.cambridge.org/core/journal... Thread 👇1/n

On a personal level, I'm really excited to share this pre-print. This work directly relates to my wider PhD work on negative partisanship and research on polarization - you can learn more about my other research on: katharinalawall.com (fin)
Many people to thank for feedback and support with this paper, incl @denisebaron.bsky.social @mauritsmeijers.bsky.social and many others not on here. (8/n)
So, should political parties use negative identity campaigning? Not necessarily! Yes, it can mobilise new supporters. But: turns off invested supporters & not a winning fundraising strategy. Plus: negative identity campaigning may polarization – bad for democracy (7/n)
