I’m excited to announce the launch of my lab at EPFL in Jan 2026 🎉. We’ll combine evolution & synthetic biology to study and (re)engineer bacterial communication.
I’m recruiting PhD students to start in the first semester of 2026.
Apply via EPFL PhD programs by Nov 1

Also our new book came out! It's technically a textbook, but should be a good primer for anyone trying to work out how to understand synbio in society using an approach

A scientist so dedicated they used up all their own hair on this project
- 3.5 year postdoc developing mathematical and computational (machine learning) approaches for designing synthetic communities and learning about their structure from data
- 18 month research associate developing lab automation approaches for accessible, high-throughput co-culturing.
- 3 year (+ 2 years possible) postdoc developing the molecular and microbiology tools for rapid, modular assembly of synthetic communities
I'm going to be advertising for a few positions in my group in the next couple of months for a big project on synthetic microbial communities.
I would love to hear from you if you are interested and I'd also appreciate if everyone could share this far and wide!
And of course there will be loads of time for catching up with (and meeting new) friends and colleagues!
We are also lucky enough to host a panel session on the Policy and Innovation Landscape with incredible R&D thought leaders and policy experts.
For Early Career attendees, we have a careers panel session with academics and industry scientists covering a diversity of backgrounds and career paths.
We have an amazing selection of invited speakers - Karen Polizzi, Brenda Parker, Andreas Walther, Lucia Marucci, John Heap, Sarah Guiziou, Dongsoo Yang, Scott Allen, Dana Heldt, and Rodrigo Ledesma-Amaro, PhD
