Last Wednesday our first year cohort visited Winchester College, where they saw many wonderful things, including medieval chests and documents in the muniments tower. As part of the trip they also found time to visit the Cathedral. Huge thanks to James Willoughby and his colleagues for welcoming us.

With ‘Close Encounters’ as the theme, Harvey's paper explores the radical Christian martyr movement in ninth-century Córdoba, examining how clerics Paul Alvarus and Eulogius used martyrology to construct sharp boundaries around Christian identity in religiously plural al-Andalus.

Our PhD based at King's College, Ben Gray, joined the Haskoli Islands Student Conference on the Medieval North. His presentation looked at the three Finnic allies of Novgorod as part of a forum held every April in Reykjavik dedicated to doctoral students working in medieval northern studies
