a black and white picture of the steamship ticonderoga
The steamboat Ticonderoga was launched on Lake Champlain on this day in 1906. It was the last steamboat built along Lake Champlain.
The boat operated on the lake almost 50 years and was moved to the Shelburne Museum in 1955.
Luckyyyyyy
The glamorous amenities of the premier passenger trains of that past is all fine and good, but I really REALLY wanna know about the just the average ass passenger experience. Gimme that Day coach sandwich service info!
Anyway, unlike dining cars, I don’t know that there was good documentation of the services. Like menus or advertising of offerings. I’ve not come across much yet.
Like, I talked someone I know who grew up riding the Central Vermont Railway and later worked for them. He told me it was a guy who would walk through the train selling sandwiches. He never Bought them because he overheard a conductor say the guy brought them into the bathroom with him…
when it comes to food on trains the first thoughts that come to mind tends to Be luxurious dining cars. But I often find listed in time tables “Sandwich service” and DAMN I need to know more About that!
The ground is kind. It’s always there to catch you when you fall.

Oh hell yeah! Are you gonna do one with a coffin feed water heater????
So pretty!!
Not every then and now is so similar however. The train shed in early postcards of Essex Junction was demolished between 1957-58 with this newer depot replacing it. The recently completed new platform is a welcome addition.
Randolph Vermont!
the first postcard is from around 1898-1901.
a while ago I did some posts comparing old postcards of Vermont Train stations to how they look today. Well! I have a couple more!
Here is Waterbury Vermont!
dawnfire deer hunched over the table, head in hands, staring off into space, haunted by reading the news again.
just another day
I just realized years ago at a train show I got 2 books on railroads in postcards. A thing I didn’t collect at the time, but sure as hell do now!! lol
Does anyone else do this thing, where you buy a book cuz its cheep and vaguely relates to a topic you like, and then years later you find it again and realize, OH SHIT, THIS IS VERY RELEVANT TO MY CURRENT OBSESSION!!
OMG
HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Thanks to @coaldust.bsky.social for this one, with a brief cameo of yours truly in the background
Oh! I was in the car right in front of you lol
Went to Brattleboro to see how the new station is coming along. It’s probably still far from opening, but I’m very impressed with how it looks so far! It will have the first door level platform on the Vermonter route north of Massachusetts
went on a little trip on Amtrak’s Vermonter today
