Every defense of the electoral college as not wanting “New York” and “California” to decide things for Real Americans is based on this and somehow those making them are taken seriously by the Serious People

The implicit media consensus is that urban voters should not be able to overrule rural voters, but that rural voters should be able to overrule urban voters, an assumption so axiomatic and unquestionable that nobody even understands they're making it.
this is foundational to the u.s. elite political consensus and is enshrined in the constitution via the senate and the amendment process, among other things
key thing we learned from Virginia campaign
Republicans are freaked the fuck out about accountability
Not just Trump, all of them - including their billionaires, like Thiel
They fear what's coming when Dems win - and Dems need to be ruthless about it
LEAD CHANGE: Fairfax County reports more votes, and puts the "yes" ahead.
The 'yes' now leads 50.3% with 49.7%, a lead of 15K.
More importantly: Half of Fairfax County, where the 'yes' is leading by 80K votes at the moment, remains to be counted.
NBC News has called the race for the YES.
And now for what you've been waiting for — the reaction of Senator Louise Lucas, one of the main instigators of the 10-1 map. She does not post on here, so linking to her post on X: x.com/SenLouiseLuc...
The YES has won in Virginia; voters approved the constitutional amendment to adopt Dems' congressional gerrymander.
This is likely to deliver a 10-1 (Dem) congressional delegation in November, compared to 6-5 (Dem) now.
The remaining obstacle: State supreme court will be weighing in still.
what remains to be seen:
—What Florida Republicans do in a special session next week.
—What Missouri's supreme court does with ballot petitions to block the new Missouri map (accounts for 1 GOP seat).
—What Virginia's supreme court does with the GOP lawsuit against the Virginia referendum.
With the result in Virginia, here's what we know about how mid-decade redistricting has shifted the landscape.
Across the 7 states with new maps:
—11 districts have shifted toward Democrats;
—9 districts have shifted toward the GOP.
The yes won the redistricting referendum in Virginia.
The yes won a referendum to change the timing of local elections to increase turnout in Coral Gables, Florida.
There were two referendums tonight!
Perhaps not of equal importance... but we were following both at @boltsmag.org.

Remember when Republicans drew Virginia's Congressional map so Black people were packed into one district and said we should be grateful they gave our community this district. NOW they can have one district and see how much they love it.
Virginia state Senator Louise Lucas (a Democrat who is the chamber's president pro tempore) just tweeted this:
Screenshot of social media post VA state senator Louise Lucas: “You all started it and we fucking finished it.” Quote tweeting Ted Cruz calling Virginia redistricting a “brazen abuse of power”
Virginia state senator Louise Lucas’s used the line:
“You all started it and we fucking finished it.”
much more effectively in context of Republicans redrawing congressional district maps mid-decade in red states like Texas and others because GOP knows they can’t win without voter suppression.
We finally have what you've all been waiting for: the final result of Loudoun County.
(Anyone who followed the 2024 count remembers Loudoun.)
The YES won by 21%, with 144K ballots counted.
A very strong result (as we're seeing throughout NoVa): Spanberger won here by 29%, and Jones by only 19%.
The first action any Dem president needs to take is reforming and packing the courts so thoroughly they never try this again for centuries. The conservative legal movement is making a mockery of the constitution and the law.
It really gives the game away. Religious freedom when they want to target LGBTQ people and no religious freedom when they want the state to indoctrinate their preferred religion (evangelical Christianity) on students.
The Supreme Court found that a school acknowledging the existence of LGBTQ people was such a violation of freedom of religion that they had to allow opt outs but now the 5th circuit says kids being exposed to the ten commandments isn't. The law is such a joke.
⚠️ Blaming the Left was the least effective messaging for motivating Democratic voters:
ma che dici?! 🤌🤌🤌
Incredible shots of the exchange between Rep. AOC and RFK, Jr. at today’s congressional hearing.

There's a decent chance now we either
A. Get Appalachia to swing left by accident after SCOTUS sides with the 6th Circuit
B. Get legal home distilling off of Gorsuch somehow.
Fifth Circuit upholding the Texas Ten Commandments law
Working on getting a full link, but here's a notable portion from the Fifth Circuit re: the Ten Commandments case in Texas:
INBOX: The Fifth Circuit issued a ruling today upholding Senate Bill 10, which mandates that the Ten Commandments be displayed prominently in Texas public schools
Appreciate you writing about this Adam. Many of us are saying that people should answer the question.
After seeing the aftermath of Abdul El-Sayed asking Olivia Reingold what she meant by a Jewish state, I became convinced it's a question that should be asked more often. www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...
The people asking “Does Israel have a right to exist?” are usually asking, “Does Israel have the right to prioritize maintaining a Jewish voting majority above enfranchising every person living in the territory they are governing?” And I wish they would be honest enough to ask that question.
This was the 4th story on WCVB this evening at 6 p.m. — after a much longer story about police caught in the middle of a "street takeover."
No one is asking questions why this driver even still had her license.
A 10-year-old is killed and all we are left with is platitudes about how tragic it is.
It should not be possible to go 65 mph on a residential street
This is monstrous. Just profoundly shameful behavior by our government.
