Bitter Honey by Caryl Lewis Caryl Lewis's self-confessed obsession with bees lies behind the second novel she's written in the English language. Bitter Honey is a tale of grief, friendship and new beginnings set at Berllan Deg, an orchard farm in the Welsh countryside. The farm and its cottage become a refuge for three women at different stages of their lives, helping them to make sense of their pasts and the possibilities for new futures.

They said,
"All those children and not one of them here at the moment of his death."
The day after he died his younger daughter Raffaella ap-peared, the one who had been in the mountains with the Par-tisans. She was wearing trousers, a red handkerchief round her neck, and a pistol in a holster.
She was eager for her father to see her with that pistol. She came to Le Pietre and found Magna Maria at the garden gate with black crepe on her head. Maria began to cry and said,
"What a tragedy—what a tragedy!"
Then she embraced Raffaella and said,
"How splendid you are! Yes, splendid, splendid!" and added,
"But don't you ever fire that pistol here."

Another recent arrival I need to make time for, this time from Columbia University Press - Kōbō Abe's historical novel 'The Traitor' (translated by Marc Gibeau), which - in Tanizaki-like style - has a mysterious manuscript playing a key role. Anyone out there looking forward to this one?
