The bugs are coming! Just a quiet evening along the Yellowstone during the Mother’s Day Caddis emergence a few years back. The first “mega-hatch” of the year is nearing. Stay tuned for news and tips as we get close…!

A massive rock tower rises abruptly from the landscape, dominating nearly the entire frame. This is Devils Tower National Monument, seen from below so that it appears steep, vertical, and imposing.

The formation is shaped like a broad, flat-topped column with slightly rounded sides. Its surface is marked by long, straight vertical grooves running from base to summit. These lines resemble enormous fluted columns or frozen drips of stone, emphasizing the tower’s height and giving it a ribbed texture. The rock is light gray in this monochrome image, with darker streaks highlighting cracks and weathered sections.

At the base of the tower, a band of conifer trees wraps around the formation. The trees look small compared to the rock, emphasizing the scale. They cling to ledges and the lower slopes, their pointed tops forming a dark, uneven line between the tower and the ground.

In the foreground, the terrain is covered with a wide field of broken boulders and rocks of various sizes. The stones appear angular and scattered, forming a rough, uneven surface that slopes gently upward toward the tower. A few small pine trees and shrubs grow among the rocks, their trunks thin and their branches sparse.

On the right edge of the image, a tall, bare tree trunk rises vertically with no leaves, its branches jagged and skeletal. On the left edge, partial silhouettes of other trees frame the scene, creating a natural border around the tower.

The sky above is pale and blank, with no visible clouds, which makes the tower’s outline stand out sharply. The overall impression is one of scale and solidity — a solitary, monumental rock rising straight upward from a rugged field of stone, surrounded by scattered forest.

What size pots will you use next? I was thinking of using a 5 gal pot next but would rather stay away from root bound.

The state government of Idaho loves to meddle with its citizens medical and personal rights.

It’s a plant that brings in high tax dollars. Plus most Idahoans go to Oregon or Montana for legal weed anyway.

Wildfire forecast, part 1: The heat is on Calls to consolidate Forest Service, Interior firefighters stalled in 2025, but may revive as 2026 weather forecasts heat up.

The start of the calendar year is typically a low-activity fire period, but 2026 has tested that rule.

We had about 30 Mule Deer walkthrough our campsite. We notice this deer with a growth just below the eye. Probably about the size of baseball.

Spent the last two days camping at Mammoth CG. So peaceful at YNP while it’s mostly closed.

Grundens make good stuff. I have noticed a few guides switching over to their gear. I loved Simms waders. But my last set started leaking after only a year.

False Spring here in Montana. So might as well going camping. Ripple is surely enjoying being outdoors.

I have lots of family in the Athol and Bonners Ferry area. Idaho has some very beautiful places, just very backwards on their politics.

Very interesting to see displayed like this. The majority of the Midwest and The Plains depend on our mountains for water! The power of the Rocky Mountains.
