A major cabinet reshuffle in September significantly impacted the two relevant departments for food imports; DEFRA and DBT.

Today is #BackBritishFarmingDay, an annual event to raise awareness on the importance of our food system and to celebrate those that work in it. If this post is in your feed as you scroll, we know that for you caring about our food system and farmers isn’t just a once-a-year thing.
Come to our talk at Vegan Campout on Sunday at 20:30 on the Education Stage to hear about the power we create by campaigning together with farmers!
Working to stop substandard imports will help both animals and farmers, and why we need your help to do so.

Sarah, Tom and Kerri set up Vegans Support the Farmers in 2023 to build bridges with farmers and understand their points of view. We’ve had a blast running the half-marathons and fundraising for mental health support – something that has touched all three of us and our families.
The charity is named after Daniel Picton-Jones, who took his life following struggles with his mental health. We had the privilege of hearing his wife, Emma, talk at the Oxford Farming Conference about how she turned a tragedy into a positive force for change by creating The DPJ Foundation.
We first met them at the 2024 Royal Welsh Show and were very impressed with their work. They provide support that includes a mental health helpline and counselling, publishing books for children impacted by suicide and giving training to spot the signs that someone needs help.
We are thrilled to announce that we have donated £6,000 to The DPJ Foundation, an amazing charity doing brilliant work supporting the mental health of farmers and their families.

This week is #FarmSafetyWeek, a campaign run by the Farm Safety Foundation to raise awareness on the physical and mental wellbeing challenges faced by farmers.
Food imports that don’t meet domestic production standards are one of the issues that negatively impact the mental health of farmers.
We need to keep the pressure on so that fair imports stays at the top of their list.

On Tuesday the government released their ‘Good Food Cycle’ policy paper for their food strategy.
The paper identifies ten priority outcomes needed to build a thriving food sector, including upholding trade standards.
Trump has pushed back his deadline, but time is still running out. Not everyone is aware of this issue, so please share this post to make sure friends and family can sign the petition.

Over 30,000 signatures handed to the government!
Letting in cheap food that’s illegal to produce here isn’t trade - it’s betrayal. We want food to be imported, but not at the expense of British farmers.
British farmers and animal advocates are united in their opposition to the Gulf Trade Deal’s compromise of welfare standards.
Agricultural imports should be legally required to adhere to the same standards as UK farmers.

Exciting News!
The Vegans Support the Farmers team will be exhibiting at Groundswell, The Regenerative Agriculture Festival, on the 2nd and 3rd of July!
We can’t wait to chat with farmers and other attendees about how vegans and farmers can work together!

Can vegans and farmers work together?
Welsh mixed farmer Ioan thinks so.
Here’s what he had to say when we asked him that question earlier this month at Transition Live, an event hosted by Farmers Weekly.
Let us know in the comments if you think vegans and farmers can work together!
Last year, we ran four half-marathons to fundraise, and we will be announcing which farming charity we are donating to shortly. So far nearly £6,000 has been raised.
The fundraiser is still live so please do head to our bio for a link and donate!
#MindYourHead #MentalHealth #SuicideAwareness
Despite the brilliant work done by the groups we meet at farming events like SOBS, The Farming Community Network, The DPJ Foundation, Yellow Wellies, YANA, Papyrus and many others, poor mental health remains an ongoing challenge in the farming community.
In January 2024, we laid out 133 pairs of pink wellies in Westminster Square. It represented the number of farming lives lost to suicide in just one year.
Farmers are still waiting for clarity on the recent #USUK #trade agreements and what exactly the impacts will be for them.
Perhaps this latest announcement is a sign that the government is starting to see sense and realise food is produced by hard working farmers and not supermarket fairies.
A handful of farmers have received positive news after finding out that their in-progress #SustainableFarmingIncentive applications may now be finished and submitted.
The scheme was unfairly and abruptly closed in March this year, despite farmers being told they would receive 6 weeks notice.
Further destruction of #BritishFarming incoming?...
Full details on the new ‘trade deal’ with the US are not yet known, but Liberal Democrat leader @EdDavey has said that he has “grave concerns”.

We were honoured to walk alongside so many farmers, growers, and activists last month for the @foodinourhands march.
We marched to demand a new and better food system that supports all farmers.
