Fair, the letterboxd stuff I try not to think too hard about, and I was definitely grumpy when I wrote it lol. Also I’ve been reading baudrillard this past week which put me in a particular frame of mind
I found the new Super Mario movie so boring that I started working out a (somewhat cheeky and reductive) theory of video games during it, and then went home and typed it up letterboxd.com/gavinsaywhat...
looks like a really cool PhD position in software design from a feminist and disability studies perspective werkenbij.uva.nl/en/vacancies...

If Marcuse was on the CIA payroll to produce pro-imperialist theory, then why was he working for the government of Stalin’s ally in the war against fascism
we are really desperate for a good theory of the forum... there was a decent amout of stuff on usenet and some on The Well but feels like media theory hopped right over to social media without understanding the form that gave birth to its most significant pathologies
why is every idea so bad

Looks like it's time to apply for supercomputer access
It’s driven me crazy for years how public funding is almost never a part of these conversations
Beverly Cleary would have you believe not only that Henry Huggins could collect 1300 worms in a single evening, but that his neighbor would willingly pay for the whole lot at a penny a worm — the equivalent of $200 today. Such excessive prosperity can be understood only as Cold War propaganda
I like the name Digital Studies
I'll go first: Here we have a BA in "Media & Information" (in distinction to film/tv-oriented "Media & Culture"). It's popular and students like it, but I have a suspicion it could be more popular, and perhaps the name is part of the issue...
Q for media studies academics: Do you have an internet/digital media-specific track or major for BA students? And if so, what is it called? And if you like, how's it going in terms of popularity/satisfaction?
I’m going to say it is not representative of my lived experience
Museum exhibit where you push a button to smell “vaginal secretion”
I’ve been to plenty of Dutch museums with highly sexual content but this completely blew me away
It’s really uncanny how europe is 5-10 years behind the US in wokeness trends… you get to understand how Cassandra felt
At the children’s science museum in Bremen, where they’ve cited Eva Illouz in the love exhibit
One last thing to do before I go on Easter holiday to Osnabrück/Bremen: peer review

Judith Butler's short essay published in the wake of the Sokal hoax, "Merely Cultural," remains shockingly relevant today www.jstor.org/stable/466744
Really pleased to advertise these 4 LSE postdocs in the history of popular government as part of our ERC Synergy Project "Popular Government in Global Perspective (POPGOV)"
Was talking to someone about how Jameson’s project never addresses music, but of course how could it? It is quite wedded to representation and allegory, which don’t lend themselves well to sonic categories. Funny also bc Adorno is such a big influence on him…
buying the cheese just for the rind seems off to me… I need to feel like I’m using something that would otherwise be waste
