Too late to turn to Europe?

“The exam question is: where do you want to be in 10 or 15 years’ time, given the world we appear to be moving into? Is the UK seriously prepared to rethink its red lines?” Rogers asks.

The Agents Are Waking Up The Intelligence Revolution that swept through the software industry this past winter is coming to knowledge-work next.

Good post by a history prof, in the genre “What most people don’t understand yet is …” — although, in my experience, a lot of the academics it’s addressing do grasp what’s happening with agents, and just really wish it would not happen.

‘Everything is gone’: Israel destroys entire villages in Lebanon Rights groups fear tactic of ‘domicide’ trialled in Gaza, where entire areas are made uninhabitable, is being used again

One of the the villages the IDF demolished is my friend's ancestral home, Taybeh. Not a house, not a commercial building, not a gas station, the whole ancient village that survived the Ottomans, colonialism, and every other Israeli occupation. Just obliterated in the name of collective punishment.

The weird resilience of the EU A decade into the age of nationalism, the idea of quitting the club is still remarkably taboo

"There is nothing like mortal danger to bring a club together. And so three nationalist shocks — Brexit, America First, Russia’s war — have given a multilateral, technocratic and liberal institution a sense of existential purpose that it was starting to lack."

Trump announces naval blockade of Strait of Hormuz as Iran peace talks fail Reopening the critical waterway is a sticking point in negotiations as oil supply bottlenecks prompt a global energy crisis

Presumably the Americans will now shift seamlessly from denouncing Europeans for not militarily opening the Straits of Hormuz, to denouncing them for not militarily helping to keep the Straits closed.

The law is a victory for Israel’s far right and reflects the country’s shift to the right in the wake of the Hamas-led attack on Israel on Oct. 7, 2023, and the Gaza war that followed. The death penalty has long been legal in Israel, but only two people have been executed in the country’s 78-year history.

The law makes death by hanging the default sentence in Israeli military courts trying Palestinians accused of killing people in militant attacks. Israeli citizens — both Jewish and Palestinian-Arab — could also face the death penalty for attacks that aim to “negate the existence of the state of Israel.” However, experts say the chances of it being applied to Jewish Israelis are minuscule.

L'ast week the Foreign Affairs Committee – in a genuinely terrifying report on Disinformation Diplomacy that you should probably read – set out that a whole society approach to something called “media literacy” is a key component of our national security.' 1/3
