The People With Money are so far divorced from The People Who Actually Make The Goddamn Thing in the entertainment industry it's not even funny

a major reason why adobe is killing animate is almost surely because AI is seen as a major threat to art software on wall street, and execs at adobe probably saw animate as dead weight because they couldn't stick AI into a 25 year old codebase made for animated banner ads

text from an adobe email which reads:

We’re contacting you to let you know that Adobe will be discontinuing Adobe Animate on March 1, 2026. As an existing Animate user, you may continue to use Animate, but please note that technical support will no longer be available after March 1, 2027.

Please note that access to your Animate files and project data will end on March 1, 2027. To ensure a smooth transition, we encourage you to export your Animate FLA and XFL files to other formats such as SWF, SVG, and MP4 files before this date.

Customers with a Creative Cloud Pro plan can use other apps to replace some Animate functionality, including Adobe Express Premium for quick creation of animated videos and graphics and Adobe After Effects for more complex keyframe animation using the Puppet tool. All Creative Cloud members can also use free animation presets in Adobe Express to animate text, images, and design elements.

Adobe is evil.
I use Animate to build AIR apps. nothing else does this. so now there’s no way for me to access my OWN WORK after they pull the plug?
this should be illegal.

yikes good thing I didn't use Adobe Animate to create the entire body of work spanning my whole career as a cartoonist- oh wait that is exactly what i did

All made at least partially with Adobe Animate, the program that adobe doesn't think deserves to exist anymore

2 months ago 306 69 3 0

I remember howling about subscription-based software when they first pulled this Creative Cloud shit and here we are.

It needs to be made illegal.

To be able to say, "Oh, you never really owned your access to things you built." is the peak of corporate greed. Enough is enough!

Continued Use of Animate Projects
Existing installations remain functional: If you already have Animate installed, you can keep using it after March 1, 2026. Adobe isn’t disabling the software; they’re just stopping new sales and eventually ending support.
Your files remain accessible: Animate projects (.fla files) and exported animations will continue to open and run in the software you already own.

Support timeline:
Until March 1, 2027, individual customers will still receive support.
Enterprise customers get extended support until March 1, 2029.
No new updates: After discontinuation, there won’t be bug fixes, security patches, or compatibility updates. Over time, this could make Animate harder to run on newer operating systems.

What You Can Do With Your Work
Export before deadlines: Convert your Animate projects into widely supported formats (like MP4, GIF, or HTML5 Canvas) so they remain usable in other tools.

Migrate to other Adobe apps:
After Effects can import SWF/FLA exports for advanced editing.
Adobe Express is suitable for quick, lightweight animations.
Backup your files: Keep copies of your Animate installer and project files in case you need to reinstall or revisit old work.

Someone has a year to buy the code for Adobe Animate, make it open source like Blender, and really do something worthwhile in this world.

Called and spoke with Adobe customer support and the guy told me Adobe is discontinuing Animate because apparently the company can't think of any new features to add to the program and they feel it's gotten stale.

So they're just GETTING RID OF IT???

I AM FURIOUS.

Adobe Animate remains an industry standard for TV animation. Star Trek: Lower Decks was made in Animate. Haunted Hotel was made in Animate. My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic was made in Animate.

And because you can't buy a permanent licence anymore, it'll just be gone.
