it’s hard to pinpoint. im from texas. i almost feel like i just got lucky. oddly enough, i feel like my vacation bible school teaching taught me about oppression and discrimination? obviously in the context of being persecuted for faith, but i feel it equipped me with the language. i was also raised on like… classical media? ✨revolutionary media✨? lots of revolutionary war, to kill a mockingbird (obvi has its own issues), a surprising amount of shoah media (anne frank, the book thief, etc.), texas history, even stuff like the lion king. i also was very much a feminist growing up, so the concept of people having power over others was present in my mind. also, growing up in texas i saw a lot of racism towards the latino population. my parents were pretty good about telling me what wasn’t right/fair to think/say about people.

obviously as i grew, being in less insulated spaces online, i grew to have a better understanding of the struggles of various groups, especially as i got into high school history. i guess i just… felt it? i was perhaps too empathetic as a kid but ultimately as i learned to process those feelings, the empathy allowed me to see glaring disparities. i was brow-beaten with the bible growing up but it instilled in me the belief that everyone deserves kindness and love and access.
it’s been pretty uncomfortable, obviously. 2020 especially made me confront some things. i know i was raised with privilege and can’t apologize my way into the trust of bipoc, and definitely still have work to do, re: learning/unlearning behaviors and beliefs. i already am a very “oh

shit it’s all my fault” person so understanding i come from culture of white supremacy and oppression was… not fun, but was definitely unsurprising. like “well. that sounds about right :///“. in recent years ive made more of an effort to search out educators who provide knowledge about oppression and history, etc. because i like knowledge and maybe if i know it i can help correct my own community? idk. lots to think about.

bottom line: idk, i hate hurting people and want to minimize my own harm and use what i learn to redirect/educate my own community. its taken a while to get to this conclusion and ive got more to do. lifelong work, i imagine 😅

Duane Puryear holding the AIDS quilt panel he completed before his death. It reads "MY NAME IS DUANE KEARNS PURYEAR. I WAS BORN ON DECEMBER 20, 1964. I WAS DIAGONISED WITH AIDS ON SEPTEMBER 7, 1987 AT 4:45 PM. I WAS 22 YEARS OLD. SOMETIMES, IT MAKES ME VERY SAD. I MADE THIS PANEL MYSELF. IF YOU ARE READING IT. I AM DEAD..."

Every time some elected democrat sucks off Reagan, I think about Duane.
