Illegal lamprey selling operation on Klamath River shut down by CDFW A Placer County man is going to jail after the California Department of Fish and Wildlife busted an illegal fish selling operation.

Pacific Lamprey poacher/trafficker caught. Lamprey are an important part of the ecosystem & to tribal peoples & deserve our protections. Good job wardens and the deputy district attorney who prosecuted, especially for less known, less appreciated species. #NoTrashFish

For-Profit Companies Can’t Easily Replace NOAA’s Weather-Forecasting Prowess Replicating the abilities of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s fleet of weather satellites would take time and a lot of money—and expose private companies to a large amount of…

Anytime a storm is brewing, your local forecasters are getting the latest data from NOAA. As the agency faces an uncertain future, one thing's for sure: for-profit companies would struggle to replicate NOAA's weather-forecasting prowess.

Government’s wins are often invisible: Systems that avoid plane crashes; alliances that avert war; surveillance that prevent pandemics.

Government wins are often *the avoidance of loss.*

So how do we tell the story of the destruction of government? The story of future losses *not* averted?

A pink box with heart border and text reading, "We Love Our Federal Fisheries Workforce! Federal fisheries professionals are American heroes who safekeep our fisheries and aquatic resources for all of us."

Today, we share our love for federal #fisheries professionals who work tirelessly to address the myriad problems facing our nation’s fisheries. We urge the Administration to stop indiscriminate mass firings and to build and maintain a sufficient federal natural resource workforce.

All of this this is in addition to massive cuts to scientific research that have been mandated in recent days. It's hard to see this as anything other than an intentional decimation of critical public safety services, and also of science in general, in the U.S.

Ultimately, we point out that increasing hydroclimate whiplash (as discussed in our recent review paper) may be an under-appreciated contributor to increasing wildfire risk with #ClimateChange (especially in grasslands & shrublands, as in SoCal, & mixed/semi-arid forests). [6/8]

Also, even a temporary or partial interruption in NOAA/NWS 24/7 lifesaving services--which are often used in an hour-by-hour (even minute-by-minute) context--would have this effect. The NWS is a critical public utility and it would be extremely difficult to rebuild if torn down.

I want to be clear: the private sector, as it presently exists, *cannot* quickly spin up to fill any void left by substantial dismantling of #NOAA. Full stop. If that were to happen, people would die in extreme weather events who would not have otherwise, & economy would suffer.

Received a letter from POTUS today purporting to remove me as Commissioner and Chair of the FEC. There's a legal way to replace FEC commissioners-this isn't it. I've been so fortunate to serve the American people and stir up some good trouble along the way. That's not changing anytime soon.

Press statement from Los Angeles Department of Water and Power: WATER SUPPLY PREPAREDNESS & AVAILABILITY IN PACIFIC PALISADES
In advance of the fire, LADWP activated its emergency preparedness protocols and filled all available water storage facility tanks (around 114 throughout the City), including three 1-million-gallon tanks in Palisades area.

Water was supplied continuously to the area through our pipes flowing to the Palisades area and remains available but is limited in areas at higher elevations, impacting some fire hydrants. This occurred because demand exceeded the speed with which the three water tanks located at higher elevations in the Pacific Palisades could be replenished due to extreme water demand. Due to the intensity of fires, various contingency plans were impacted, hampering access to the tanks by crews. At one-point crews attempting to reroute water to refill the Marquez Knolls tank had to be evacuated.

You may see misinformation about water availability, linking the Palisades Fire to statewide policy. There is no link. See statement from LADWP. They had the water to fill all the existing tanks ahead of time, and did. The challenges have nothing to do with lack of supply or smelt in the Delta.

Differences in misinformation sharing can lead to politically asymmetric sanctions - Nature We find that conservatives tend to share more low-quality news through social media than liberals, and so even if technology companies enact politically neutral anti-misinformation policies, political...

🚨In Nature🚨
Meta is dropping fact-checking to avoid anti-conservative bias- but is there actually evidence of bias?
We this test empirically & find that conservatives
* ARE suspended more
* BUT share more misinfo
So suspension isn't necessarily evidence of bias www.nature.com/articles/s41...

Got crafty with my Dad when I was visiting in September. I wanted to learn how to use his lathe so we made a salt cellar. It’s the littlest things you appreciate at some points, like time with your folks. Spalted Maple.
