🚨Iran’s $3 billion wall and border strategy with Afghanistan
A detailed geospatial analysis of #Iran’s eastern frontier with #Afghanistan, presenting key findings, security data, and an open-source interactive map to visualise the region's defence infrastructure.
medium.com/@qaisalamdar...
The report is based on four months of research using open-source data, including satellite imagery from Google Maps, Bing Maps, Google Earth Pro, and ArcGIS, alongside news and academic studies. Findings were visualised with tools like Canva and Flourish Studio.
👉Report: medium.com/@qaisalamdar...
The wall aims to reduce illegal crossings, including drug and human trafficking, but won't entirely eliminate them. Iran's key concern is militant infiltration and escalating tensions with the Taliban, whose lack of global recognition worsens the security dilemma.
*Video shows artillery positions.
A user-friendly map categorises and visualises the security infrastructure, offering detailed geospatial data for researchers, journalists, and policymakers.
Iran’s ambitious wall project, initiated in 2024, aims to seal the border with a 4-metre-high, 300-kilometre concrete barrier. Satellite imagery reveals the wall is being built in sections, with 75 kilometres completed as of January 2025.
The report identifies over 500 security installations along the border, including 337 watchtowers, 142 outposts, artillery positions, and new military camps. These installations are strategically placed to maximise surveillance and response capabilities.
