I was at work when someone posited "Would you rather become invisible or be a shapeshifter?"

The two trans folks (I was one of those two) blurted out "Shapeshifter!" basically before the guy finished asking the question ๐Ÿ˜‚

I've generally found that if someone applies the term "ally" to themselves (in any circumstance), they're generally not.

Yes.

In fact, if I pay for a service and the start throwing in ads, I cancel.

I used to work in AdTech.

Ads are a blight on the human consciousness.

I don't care what you allege your politics to be.

If you post AI slop I will block the shit out of you so damn quickly.

No, no there is not.

Is the entire engine a sealed unit from the manufacturer?

Assuming folks have good enough credit for a lease and something as small as a Bolt works for 'em it's absolutely the right call.

Yep, but it's also a different set of dangers.

I wonder how many folks have the tools to safely fix high voltage vs safety fix an internal combustion engine.

And while it's getting better, things are not in a place where I can recommend an EV to someone who can barely afford a $4000 car.

I know; I grew up working on cars. But not all manufacturers are gung-ho about letting their EV parts out to non-dealers. (I blame Tesla for setting that precedent)

Those specialists are not exactly common, especially in rural areas where infrastructure has been built assuming everyone has access to a car.

The barrier to repairability is the issue here, not if the car can be fixed.

Don't get me wrong, things will continue to improve. But we're not there yet.

I don't just mean repairing the electrics, I mean mechanical parts like suspension and such.

If a gas engine throws a rod you can fix that shit in your backyard with enough skill and patience.

Less so when an EV suffers a similarly catastrophic failure.

Yes.

But if the battery does fail it's prohibitively expensive to replace.

The Leaf being a typical Nissan is why it's easier to repair at a normal shop; Nissan knows the make junk.

But the Leaf is still an outlier in its "ease" of repairability relative to most EVs from what I understand.

All my shit is wired whenever possible these days ๐Ÿ˜‚

I got an Everdrive and it really saved me a ton of grief.

I can keep all the games I own with me and still use original hardware.

Sounds good! I'll prolly do a quick notes thread in a few hours and tag you so other folks can leverage the info too.

Great! I recommend avoiding Nissan dealerships whenever possible.

What does this have to do with battery repair/replacement and EVs at large requiring repairs at dealerships?

As far as I understand the Leaf is an outlier in terms of repairability and basically requires Nissan to fix the battery.

Depending on the screen the only thing you need to solder is a single wire.

Soldering is one of those things that's easier than you expect, but the up-front investment isn't nothing and a practice project is highly recommended. (Like a dice roller kit with LEDs and 555 timers or something.)

I'm excited for the day of the truly cheap EV, but batteries are far too expensive and most EVs functionally require repairs to happen at dealerships.

Until that changes I don't know how normal folks are supposed to own EVs.

One of the best mods I've done was putting a USB-C port into my SP.

No other mods so I wouldn't feel guilty about just tossing it into my bag.

10/10 would recommend if you're up for some soldering.

I wrote a detailed universal user guide to using GenAI programs:

Chapter 2: Go create something yourself
Chapter 3: Oh, it's hard and you want to use GenAI instead? Fuck you, see chapter 1
Chapter 4: Keep creating things yourself
