learnt from the very good book on gladiatorial life I'm reading that powerful Roman men generally wanted to be depicted in statues as looking tired and worn because it conveyed them as being hard working and self-sacrificing. which explains all those baggy eyes.

It’s all well and good for tech leaders to endorse UBI. But it feels convenient to only focus on a distant political prospect. The GOP, right now, is doing reverse-UBI (work requirements on SNAP). It’d be nice to hear more objections to that.
That "friend" should be defrocked.
Baking set to opera. Found this weirdly satisfying.

exactly three democrats voted for gorsuch (the final vote was 54-45, heitkamp, donnelly and manchin), 1 voted for kavanaugh (manchin) and none voted for barrett. bsky.app/profile/alb8...
Why @why.bsky.team 5mo Entering day four of "no phone because it broke and I can't get to an apple store", AMA Why @why.bsky.team 5mo I left it outside in the sun and when I went to pick it up, it was saying "temperature too high! let phone cool down before using again", and then within a few hours it was gone Why @why.bsky.team 5mo Okay, so full transparency. I did dip it in a pool after it said it was too hot. I was told not to do that before doing so, but my hubris said "nah these things are waterproof" and into the swim it went. I go in the pool when I want to cool down, why can't my phone?
I have not invented this
in addition to this I think it's worth bearing in mind that one of bluesky's tech leads once put his phone in a swimming pool because it was overheating then was surprised that this broke it
1. people reflexively blame AI for problems because it's obviously harmful in many domains
2. Bluesky (now "entirely AI-coded" acc. to staff) keeps breaking
3. AI is blamed. Devs say no, it's web service issues, scold AI-blamers for their ignorance
4. devs admit it was actually AI code at fault
lol
I saw someone on here arguing the other day that you don’t own a book, you only own a license to the book and the book itself is a token of the license. I assure you, I own my books. I can lend them out. I can read them aloud to my child. I can sell them to other people. I can hit you with them
yeah it is critical that dems win the senate
Several officials told me that Patel’s drinking has been a recurring source of concern across the government. They said that he is known to drink to the point of obvious intoxication, in many cases at the private club Ned’s in Washington, D.C., while in the presence of White House and other administration staff. He is also known to drink to excess at the Poodle Room, in Las Vegas, where he frequently spends parts of his weekends. Early in his tenure, meetings and briefings had to be rescheduled for later in the day as a result of his alcohol-fueled nights, six current and former officials and others familiar with Patel’s schedule told me. On multiple occasions in the past year, members of his security detail had difficulty waking Patel because he was seemingly intoxicated, according to information supplied to Justice Department and White House officials. A request for “breaching equipment”—normally used by SWAT and hostage-rescue teams to quickly gain entry into buildings—was made last year because Patel had been unreachable behind locked doors, according to multiple people familiar with the request.

The fact that Mamdani just seems like a cheerful normal guy who's policies are things like "we're going to tax second homes to fund pothole repairs" or whatever and yet this generates panicked responses like "This is basically Stalin's great purge turned up to eleven" is... telling. It tells things.

Even the most hypothetically demanding religions, when established as the religion of the city and the town, the community's religion, will be far more relaxed and (for lack of a better word) human than the version taken up in antagonism or countercultural intensity. Context matters!
"The cenobites treasured up the relics of the sannyasins because the sannyasins had approached the Pancreator. But everything had approached and even touched the Pancreator, because everything had dropped from his hand."
Regardless of anything else, it is simply a deeply *weird* time to be a culturally catholic person in the US.
In the center of the screen, a rabbit samurai raises his sword and prepares to attack a rhinoceros in a forest; snowy mountains are in the background. Up top, we see the samurai's face contorted into anger, while the rhino says: "All those who challenge me die, ronin..." The corners of the screen give the player's money (3 ryo), Karma (4), the Player's health (9/10), and the enemy's health (8/10).
