Extremely fortunate and rare to have such a smart reviewer given space to write, and Matthew King did it so thoughtfully. @clereviewbooks.bsky.social is doing great work.
“The moment when we hit bottom and must get up is when we start conjuring a true vocation from an alchemy of inspiration, talent, and circumstance.” - John W. Miller, The Last Manager: How Earl Weaver Tricked, Tormented, and Reinvented Baseball #dailyquotes
People keep saying “oh so you want OPEN BORDERS” as some kind of gotcha and like. Yeah. When I was a kid you could just drive into Canada. On accident, even. It was great, and I think we should do that instead of kidnapping children. Normalize being normal instead of being kidnapping weirdos

If you are a journalist who speaks out against the fascist Trump administration I’m sorry to say that it’s time to get your affairs in order. They’re doing a trial run arresting Black journalists right now and it’s only a matter of time until they come for all of us.
Wake up. Speak out.

Finished this audiobook. It was good. I always want more depth but that's a me problem not the book's problem.
An award -- a clear baseball atop a pyramidal base, engraved with the words THE TWIN BILL BASEBALL LIT - 2025 BEST BASEBALL NONFICTION BOOK - FIELD WORK, ANDREW FORBES -- rests on a copy of the book.
I was thrilled to arrive home from our holiday earlier this week to find that this gorgeous thing had arrived from @thetwinbill.bsky.social
I'm grateful! So nice to think of the book reaching some readers who are on its wavelength.
Things I learned today from the book about Earl Weaver: what bench jockeying is and the scene in Bull Durham where Costner fights with the ump is based on Weaver.

My patience has paid off and now I'm listening to a book about the best baseball manager ever: Earl Weaver.
Earl Weaver was the first non-Yankee manager to win three consecutive pennants since the 1930s.
Ha, that's good. That's the book that hooked me. I read it when I was 11 or something in Brussels, and was captivated by the voice. Way more fun and interesting than other sports memoirs I was reading.
That is fun. What did you say in your report??
Happy World Cup year
