Marjorie Taylor Greene's resigning in time to get a pension is a lesson to everyone.
Most Americans don't get *any* pension anymore, but Congress gave itself a pension after only five years of work.
Our "representatives" aren't working for us, they are [barely] working for themselves.

Who would have thought that my op-ed from 2022" Why doesn’t Argentina have more Black players in the World Cup?" in the WaPost would become the subject of analysis!

BREAKING: A federal judge reversed National Institutes of Health's terminations of hundreds of critical research grants that were canceled because of their alleged connection to disfavored topics, including diversity, equity, inclusion, and gender identity.
This is a major win for public health.
The NEH has been a singular force for bringing people together. In this moment of hate, fear and isolation, the NEH helped us learn about our past and about each other.
Today we are losing almost all of the NEH public servants. We are all in their debt. A national shame. A profound cultural loss.
A tweet from NBC news: Measles vaccination among babies skyrocketed in Texas as the outbreak grew, new research shows. Reply by Alex Griswold: Because in practice anti-vaxx is a luxury belief based on the assumption that your neighbors' vaccines do in fact work
I've never seen it so well put before.
When Barack Obama tells universities to use their endowments you *know* it’s possible.
Dear NEH Grantee,This letter provides notice that the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is terminating your federal grant (Grant Application No. HB30233525) effective April 3, 2025, in accordance with the termination clause in your Grant Agreement.Your grant no longer effectuates the agency’s needs and priorities and conditions of the Grant Agreement and is subject to termination due to several reasonable causes, as outlined in 2CFR§200.340.For instance, NEH has reasonable cause to terminate your grant in light of the fact that the NEH is repurposing its funding allocations in a new direction in furtherance of the President’s agenda.
And there it is. NEH Faculty Award canceled, along with $30,000 of my salary this year. Guess I'll have to ask for my teaching load back for the fall.
I can’t get over how grants that were 1) funded by Congress through the appropriation process, and 2) awarded through a rigorous and blind review system, can now be 3) rescinded by unelected and unqualified DOGE bros through a haphazard gutting likely dependent on word searches and GROK.
Hearing reports of NEH staff being put on administrative leave (not sure yet how many are impacted). Grantees—remember to use eGMS for all correspondence but that staff may have severe restrictions on access to email & work material. NEH staff—we appreciate you & we’re so sorry this is happening.
Keep in mind: the NEH’s budget is 0.01% of the entire federal budget. This is not about savings - it is about the destruction of the Humanities and the critical thinking abilities that they teach. 🗃️
“The termination of your grant represents an urgent priority for this administration”
My NEH grant has been terminated
Incredible when the funding for your book about the educational culture wars is cut as a result of the educational culture wars
You can’t say history isn’t relevant
Here are some of the things that NEH support has enabled the AHA to do just in the last 5 years 🗃️:
The entire permanent staff of the Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice was laid off. This division addresses issues such as asthma and air pollution, climate change and health, childhood lead poisoning, and cancer clusters.
I hung up my DOGE termination letter near where I’m writing my book, as a reminder that the Humanities matters to a free and open society.
Far worse than the end of my NEH grant is the wholesale gutting of the NEH itself, an incalculable loss that we must fight to prevent.
If you’ve ever sat on an NEH review panel (as many of us have), you know how difficult it is to win a grant. It’s an incredibly exacting process, with way too many excellent projects competing for funding. Awardees are scrutinized from every direction, with more rigor than DOGE can even imagine.
NATIONAL ENDOWMENT FOR THE HUMANITIES
NOTICE OF GRANT TERMINATION
I knew it was coming, which is why I never announced that I had won the prestigious National Endowment for the Humanities for my next book project. But it still hurts!
Thank you!
A few tips for NEH grantees:
1) if you've spent money on an awarded grant but have not yet drawn down the funds, make sure to submit the paperwork to drawn down funds ASAP.
2) the NYTimes article suggests that "DOGE" might cancel awards. If you receive an email from DOGE cancelling your NEH award,
Please help us fight for the restoration of NEH funds, @repdangoldman.bsky.social @kirstengillibrand.bsky.social
URGENT: Save the NEH! 🗃️ As the NYTimes reported, DOGE is targeting the NEH *today* - trying to claw back grant funds and lay off up to 90% of staff. Call your Congressperson today and/or fill out the form below from the National Humanities Alliance! And let's get #SaveTheNEH trending

NEW: Researchers have sued the NIH and HHS, alleging that they have engaged in a "reckless and illegal purge to stamp out NIH-funded research that addresses topics and populations that they disfavor" by terminating hundreds of grants, violating the APA, Fifth Amendment and the Separation of Powers.
