Who should jump out of Marcus Agrippa's birthday cake? Emperors bearing drinks for all but partying so hard they bring the house down.

Today I've been trying to capture the energy of this from @jneuf on the other place. 🎂 🏛

(I hope you don't mind that I kept a copy at the other place.)

Great to see @nataliehaynes.bsky.social standing up for Hestia. I've had a small fascination with her since I first heard about her in ancient history lectures about household rituals in ancient Athens. 🔥🏺

Thanks, I'll have to look it up.
I'm at that stage where I have to work hard at translating (and developing fluency), but I'm growing more distrustful of translations in general (without going back to the original to check for myself).
But it is a joy to spend the time with Euripides.

Two new books.
On the left a copy of a commentary on Euripides' Bacchae, edited by William Allan and Laura Swift (in the yellow and green Cambridge Greek and Latin Classics series).
On the right a hardcover volume of the Loeb Classical Library edition of Bacchae, Iphigenia at Aulus and Rhesus, translated by David Kovacs.

My first new copy of a Loeb, appropriate that it's The Bacchae, since I'm spending the semester translating it in my Ancient Greek class.

Moving house, unpacking everything, supporting elderly relatives... but there were some fun things too. But the study/work combination shaped the previous 6.5 years, so I need to get back while I can - and for the poor old brain. 😅

I feel that joke intensely at the moment! 😅

My grand plans to consistently read some Latin while I did two years of Greek grammar came to little, but I console myself that it should be easier to learn again.

This semester is only Euripides, so how difficult could that be?

New Evidence Suggests Ancient Egyptians Only Ever Visited Pyramids When Friends Were In From Out Of Town LONDON—In a discovery that sheds new light on the civilization’s cultural practices, researchers at University College London presented evidence Monday that suggests ancient Egyptians never went to se...

Also I saw this earlier today, before your message, and I actually thought I should send it to you. (I recognise it may be considered naff or otherwise uncouth to share this sort of thing in Eg'ology circles)

And I'm well, although the restorative six months off didn't really work out restorative in the slightest.

But the rising fear of third year Greek after eight months away from the books is tempered by the excitement at getting back to it. 🤓

Thank you, but you're too kind. 😊 (I won't critique your η, since I'm not sure I'd do much better...)
That's a lovely video. I learnt something about bees, the Corinthian order and Acanthus (Acanthi? Acanthotes?)

Acanthus is bad for UK bees - but has great Ancient History! UK Wildlife Gardening YouTube video by Selqet's Gardener

Batten down your earholes for some mispronounced Ancient Greek, but here's a little video on why Acanthus plants are one to avoid in wildlife gardening in the UK - but have a really cool Classical backstory nonetheless!

JACT Reading Greek textbook sitting on a blank writing pad with a metal pen crossed on it. There is a coffee beside the book.
In front of the table, large windows open onto the massive yellow lettering of an Ikea store mounted on a blue background. In the middle distance, there are trees with roads crossing between them. Bliss.

Back in the saddle - ancient Greek in the restaurant at Ikea. Revising grammar with a bottomless coffee, my happy place. 🤓

After six months off study, it feels like I have a lot to relearn before classes resume at the end of July. 😬

I'm looking forward to reading it (apparently I will receive it for a birthday soon). After two years of taking ancient Greek lessons of my own, this will be interesting.

Beach Burial by Kenneth Slessor Comments & analysis: Softly and humbly to the Gulf of Arabs / The convoys of dead sailors come; / At night they

Kenneth Slessor's poem Beach Burial used to have his name and 'El Alamein' at the bottom. (Slessor was a journalist and war correspondent during WWII.)

I can still recite most of the poem decades after learning it at school.

A lot of fun listening to your Oddysey stand up this morning. And I agree on the importance of his cheese-making. With sheep and cheese, Polyphemus can't be all bad. 👁

χαίρετε / salvēte new followers.

A quick intro:
I returned to the Uni of Queensland in 2018 to study ancient history (decades-old unfinished business). After two years each of Latin and classical Greek, I'm taking a break for six months before continuing advanced Greek in mid-2025.

Also, a lot of the technical things I read about feeds were way too complicated for my level of knowledge (or interest), so I needed something easier to use. The site above worked ok for my "learn a few things and fumble through it" approach.

I used this site, reading online and experimentation to refine the criteria. Still picks up random references and things like Latin music, but it's better than nothing on a good day.
Sorry I can't be more useful, but it was a while ago, and I've done a lot of Greek since then...

For the new classical languages people arriving on Bluesky, here is a feed you can follow. It's meant to pick up any classical Greek or Latin references in posts, although it's not perfect (but then, I didn't really know what I was doing when I set it up).

Brand new here, so allow me to introduce myself briefly: I am a Latin and Greek specialist, and I write about languages, history, travelling and diving - sometimes all at the same time. Catalan speaker and minoritised language advocate. Food lover. All loaves my own.

Happy birthday to Marcus Agrippa, for those who celebrate. Men like Agrippa were essential to many of Augustus' achievements, so this is a bit of love for the wingman.

Also my annual opportunity to share this gem from @jneuf.bsky.social on the other place. 🙏
