I mostly agree that people overpack, but if you have to walk through like 3 airports, and it’s hot outside, and you’re traveling for 12 hours, it’s really nice to not be carrying 20 lbs. of extra stuff on every leg.

I have taken the same flight, BUR-OAK every Monday and Wednesday during this semester, and I almost always walk into the airport as they announce the flight is boarding. I’m not waiting around in Burbank at 6:30am for no reason other than anxiety!

Very, very important work about our perception of what “everyone” thinks is skewed by very few people online.

I would’ve died from cancer and been broke from the reconstruction without rules saying insurance had to cover it. Actually, I would’ve died from asthma as a child without insurance covering my $500/month inhalers. These dudes as the definition of ungrateful and short-sighted.

Thank you so much! There’s just SO much to do and every day more anti-human technologies that exploit our relationship with language.

Very excited to read this and I very much agree with the premise!

Science is everything. So glad for your mom and your family!

I’m glad I’m not the only one who does this. 3 years ago I was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of breast cancer that probably would’ve killed me within a decade without treatment. Now, even if it were to (heaven forbid) recur, I’ll probably make it to social security age!

Many important points in here, but I disagree that an answer is necessarily to train models on conversational speech. I wish we just acknowledged that conversation is human, and then designed these systems to be more transparently NOT human.

Example eleventy-million of why sociolinguistics is the most fun.

Student A: How would we define "diva"? Who is an example of a diva?

Student B: Beyoncé

Me: And Beyoncé would define a diva as a female version of a hustler.

Student B: I was gonna say that!

Real ones can guess what paper we read!

Watching Alex Trebek’s first Jeopardy episode from 1984, and this was the final question?!

The questions seemed SO easy but also, we don’t just ask about Hitler and Stalin so casually anymore :/

Also, the 2nd place winner got a trip to Palm Springs and 3rd got Wimbledon rackets :)

Tl;dr Target will send cops to your house weeks later if they *think* you failed to scan an item at self-checkout. Surveillance culture, corporate greed, and police state all in one.

So far Vance’s presence has killed a pope and taken down a right wing populist in Hungary. Really wish he would spend more quality time with Trump 🤞🏽

Years ago, I had a roommate who played “Brimful of Asha” by Cornershop on repeat, and finally I looked up who it was about. She was incredibly talented, and it’s great that she had such a long life.

Genuine question: the issue is that the fans don’t respect that he keeps the song for his daughter? I don’t know if folks are being more abusive about it elsewhere than this guy is.

I also think that song sucks and it’s creepily religious, but afaik, walk-up song is just the player’s prerogative.

A friend pointed out that I said “the 10” and this is how I learned that every freeway name I heard after moving here has the article, but all the ones I grew up with in Ohio do not 😆

Humanity did that. Science did that. Publicly-funded research did that. Excellent universities did that. Diversity did that. International cooperation did that.

Artemis II is a perfect example of what we can do at our best.

Kinda great! I’m not anyone’s mom or actual aunt, but I am of the proper age such that kids believe I have authority 😂

Well folks, I’m officially an auntie.

Gently scolded a little boy (maybe age 5?) coming out of the bathroom at OAK because he walked out without washing his hands. And he went back and washed them! 😂

They are required to disclose! and it’s kinda even worse because they used multiple tools…no need for Grok specifically!

It's infuriating enough to review papers for a venue that allows AI use in the writing process, but even worse to read a paper that actually used Grok. I wrote in my review that while the venue allows it, I'd encourage authors to avoid tools that specifically promote the abuse of women and children.

Extremely important analysis. Yes, people can be lazy and incurious. But also, some of this cognitive offloading is a rational response to existing within SO many systems that our human brains and bodies were not built for.

Every single government official should refuse to do a damn thing until Trump stops threatening to blow up an entire country today.
