The climate scenario RCP 8.5 is unfairly understood as "misleading," "controversial," or deceptive. This is unfortunate, write @madisoncondon.bsky.social and @vsrikrish.bsky.social — even if its predicted emissions are unlikely, it's incredibly useful for all kinds of climate modeling
Without real incentives, airlines choose not to reduce contrails ( = 2% of the world’s effective radiative forcing).
Not exactly a surprising result.
But it highlights the need for urgent contrail regulation: reducing contrails is extremely cheap - airlines just need to face the right incentives.

Defense chief says out loud why so many were worried about the Ellison purchase of Warner and with it CNN.
Harte Worte www.zeit.de/politik/deut...
Jesus this news day.
Anthropic wanted to make sure its tech wasn’t used for mass surveillance. Here’s what Hegseth did in response.
Fantastic talk! Very inspirational 👏
We are fish. And you can still tell. 🤯
Come on… that is the *main* difference?
it’s genuinely reassuring to me that this is the most miserable and paranoid person in the entire world
I don't say this often but: I'm so proud to be a climate and environment reporter. We cover an issue that is vitally important to humanity and the natural world. 14 of my climate colleagues at the Post were laid off today and I'm devastated.

"Cities, towns, and roads are seen as the big “human land use problem,” even though they only cover around 1% to 2% of habitable land. Agriculture makes up around 50%. But because it’s plants growing, it seems like a more natural part of the landscape."
"Weitzman himself emphasized the possibility of catastrophic climate outcomes, even if unlikely and unquantifiable, as a motivation for stronger action, in part by underscoring the fragility of climate-damage estimates that appeared to justify weaker responses."

This is a video of federal immigration officers murdering a woman who was not attacking them. In Minneapolis, today.
The United States Constitution protects all people in the United States, Conservative and Liberal. Its suspension will eventually harm all people, Conservative and Liberal.
Congestion pricing is an unqualified success in NYC. It would be great to see it expanded to every city with decent public transit options. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
"Eliminating fares would leave the MTA without a key source of money and raise the likelihood that bus frequency and coverage get slashed during a future crisis. A transit system without fares is a brittle one."
Super interesting work!
I agree with the need for better data. This would also allow research to back up parts of the post that suggest a causal link without any evidence (e.g. "If the 90-day rule were meaningfully shaping behaviour, density would be lowest where enforcement is tightest.").
"A key characteristic of these “messy jobs” is execution. Execution is hard because it faces the friction of the real world."
