It’s be pretty funny if they released Coyote vs ACME and it sucks.

This is one of the best pieces of pop culture writing I've read in the past couple of years. These excerpts are great but you need to read how the build to that last one. Goddamn. Thank you @awalrusdarkly.bsky.social and @popheist.com
i think it's just my algorithms since i interact w feminist content and this stuff often cloaks itself in that philosophy, but the fatalistic gender essentialism being fed to young women on social media rn is SO bleak
People actively want misinformation now - even if it means ignoring and ultimately belittling a very real and enormous set of horrific crimes - because they want an excuse for the crazy shit they're already thinking and feeling
The Internet has reached its final stages as an advanced reality detachment engine
With all due respect, wearing my own culture studies hat I'd say this is overly nostalgic and ignores how much silly, dumbass culture of the past has just been left in the dust because it wasn't worth remembering to anyone who wasn't a specialist
yeah, the real difference is that if you wanted someone to whine at you for not liking the same pulp they did in 1986 you had to hang out at a comic book shop, and you weren’t constantly exposed to the ambient drama of the Goonies fandom or whatever
meanwhile the president that year was helming the Rambo zeitgeist and yeah I don’t want that shit back either
don't want to dogpile on the guy who posted "childish mass media = politics of infantile regression" because I have humored that idea myself in the past, but in this case it seems like a correlation/causation error and people could be petulant twerps over popcult since pre-WWII anyways
BUT ALSO...
superhero/sci-fi/fantasy/gamer culture, childish as it can be, isn't the only subculture-gone-mainstream that has been accused of this; every music scene in the first 25 years of my life (disco, punk, metal, hip-hop, goth, alt-rock, rave/"electronica", et al) has been hit with those charges
people can be like this over anything, including stuff "normies" enjoy (sports, of course; also anything that could be considered a hobby w/notable consumer investment), so again it's probably more that the wider mass media goes the more it becomes a conduit for our most childish tendencies, maybe
anyways the problem isn't necessarily that geek pop culture isn't making us reactionary dipshits, it's that the reactionary dipshits and big-money cynics feel entitled enough to geek pop culture that they're making it insufferably loaded with culture-war bullshit and line-go-up extraction
I used to be able to tell my phone "navigate to Costco" and it would pull up directions. Now an AI voice tells me the address of the two nearest Costcos and advises me to use Waze or MapQuest to get there. If I open Google Maps and type Costco, I get an ad for Safeway.
I'm not kidding btw, Conservative liberal academics pushing "Actually FDRs New Deal made the great depression last longer than it would have" is essentially a recession indicator.

Not once in the 80s, 90s or 00s do I recall a politician urging the public to embrace email, mobile phones, texting, two factor authentication, online banking, air fryers, or to replace all their cassette collection with a CD collection.
So forgive me if I smell a rat.

The worst part being when you tell people this and they go, "Well, man, what even *is* intelligence? Aren't we, in a way, just predictive?? What's the difference???"
Then they open up draft kings
Instagram leftist: did you know that banks spend your money when you’re not there ⁉️
Instagram rightist: there is historical evidence of Dracula and every Jew is related to him.
if anyone is interested in my little comic history ramblings, I made a blog to post them on: dirgecomix.tumblr.com
there's only one thing up there now about the history of comic book censorship but there will be more up there someday!

interesting how one or the primary domestic stories of the last 2 years has been layoffs and the horrible job market, yet almost no media outlet covers it on a human level
there are stories about the fear/temporary reality of AI taking jobs, but little about how Trump’s bad economy, destruction of the public sector, and unfettered corporate excess has left individuals (real human beings!) unemployed for months or years. it’s barely made it into fictional media either

We should have never doubted this man
