Yesterday I learned that one of my students was named after a Princess Bride character, and that brings me joy.
A 1-year bar chart of monthly running distance, showing increasing distance over time and 1,050 total kilometers run.
It’s now 1 year since I started running (with a couch-to-5k app). Since then, I’ve run 1,000 km and I’m 5 weeks out from my 2nd half-marathon. 🎉
99% of people who find themselves in a Waffle House without knowing how they got there realize it’s because they were very, very drunk. 1% will presume it’s teleportation.
Orographic uplift!
Well done, Gavin.
In a sea of opinions about the role of LLMs in academics I offer my own.
Apart from being harmful, exploitive plagiarism machines, LLMs rob us of the opportunity to experience the gift of friction in writing, which changes how we think.
We must not give away that gift.

A screenshot from the New York Times app showing that I solved the mini crossword in 19 seconds.
This may be my greatest achievement. It’s all downhill from here.
Crude oil prices, showing a very sharp increase in the last day, from around 65 to 101 dollars per barrel..
Oil prices wouldn't be all over the news today if more of our economy was powered by local, secure renewable energy.
This isn't an "energy crisis". It's a fossil fuel crisis.
44% of UK electricity came from renewables in 2025. More of that plus an electrified economy => no more oil shocks.

I don’t know who needs to hear Jesse Jackson leading the kids on Sesame Street in this beautiful call-and-response reminding them that every child is somebody, but here it is
ooh, B.C. is raising taxes on homes worth over $3 million, as well as the interest rates on property tax deferrals — two changes sure to aggravate many homeowners! time to ring the bell again: thewalrus.ca/homeowners-r...
The most shocking thing about this (to me) is that the agents who shot a man and lied about it are actually facing some accountability. I hope they are charged.

Illustration of the Dutch Reach. You should reach across with your non-door-side hand to open a car door, because it forces you to look behind you.
Last night, I got properly "doored" for the first time. A car in the road to my right paused, and the rear left passenger threw open his door without looking, right into my path. I ended up on the floor, badly winded but ok.
If you don't know what the "Dutch reach" is, NOW is the time to learn.
One of every thousand American residents has been taken into custody by ICE in the last year.
Merd!
Correction, *marathon* record holder. Rory Linkletter claimed the half-marathon record last month.
Patrick in running gear, in front of a Run Van backdrop, holding up a finisher medal and a novelty foam hand that says “new PB!”
10 months ago, I started running for the first time (since HS gym class). Yesterday I ran my first half marathon! (It was also cool to be in the same race as Olympian and Canadian half-marathon record holder Cam Levins. He ran more than twice as fast as me. 😂)
Just keep an eye out for the Cylons 😂.
Yes, saw it at the British Museum (because imperialism).
I’m filled with sadness and rage. Do no harm.
A powerful example of the skillfully written word, and why it is so important our students don’t rest on the crutch of AI. www.nytimes.com/interactive/...
I went to high school a mile away from the district featured in this article. It’s hard to imagine the dystopian reality of the superintendent patrolling during pickup time to protect students and parents from federal agents. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/31/u...
“Her children — she asked that they remain nameless, for their own safety — came home from school on Wednesday and removed their passports from their necks. The lanyard was heavier than expected, both said; the 15-year-old made it clear that she was speaking both literally and figuratively.”
This really is a Gestapo era when parents feel they must strap their kids’ passports around their necks before they leave the house. www.nytimes.com/2026/01/31/u...
