I’m satisfied in my mind that when Olly Robbins put his signature to this letter to the Foreign Affairs Select Committee that he knew he was committing a lie of omission. It was clear what the Committee was asking and he deliberately hid the fact that Mandelson had failed his UKSV clearance. 👇

It will enable the Ambassador to operate at a more political level and engage differently across the US system. The individual concerned will need to operate as an Ambassador for the first time while also navigating a new US administration. I agree with you. I am sure KS was aware that PM was a very risky appt. But he thought he was his best shot for US Amb, given the circumstances. So he laid this trap for OR to take the blame, and OR fell for it.
