The Bollard Bulletin for April 21, 2026 Cartoon Tuesday: The "highest and best use" of our land in Bayside

“As the secret meetings, pre-determined parameters & rushed hiring of a white-shoe commercial brokerage firm show us, unelected city officials aren’t interested in what the people of Portland want to do with the land they’re supposedly managing for our collective benefit.”

A Brasserie of Artists Going Through Old Notebooks Part 37: "Artists and writers need a place to discuss things and sometimes to disagree, and that place probably isn’t social media."

As Ford Madox Ford famously said, “It is an easy job to say that an elephant, however good, is not a good warthog; for most criticism comes to that.”

Shipping’s climate reckoning: What to watch at IMO 2026 IMO 2026 will shape the future of global shipping. Learn what’s at stake for climate, port communities and the push for zero-emission ships.

“One issue that doesn’t get enough attention is scrubbers: a technology that lets ships clean their exhaust but dumps that pollution directly into the water instead. That’s not a solution. That’s moving the harm around.”

We’re working on it! It takes a state legislator.

We are living in an age of the grotesque. If are showing off money, can you not think of one other way to spend it? If you’ve think it makes you special, testifies to your exceptionalism, you could not be more wrong. The world despises you for your destruction of our marine and port environments.

When does a cruise ship of this size be called instead a floating apartment block?

Addio Venezia 💔

You will join Atlantis and Lemuria, swallowed by the sea. Perhaps they were once the most beautiful places on Earth too.

It's easier to imagine the death of Venice than the death of capitalism.

It will be swallowed by the seas. A civilization no more. A complete and unnecessary tragedy due to our obstinate selfishness.

I would love it if those of you who do not have library cards will apply for one at your local branch during #NationalLibraryWeek. Then let me know about it. 😇

Taking their coloring very seriously, 2 young visitors learning about copepods & right whales. One little girl has a bright pink bow in her black hair & is wearing a green jacket. Her friend is wearing a black hoodie with the hood up because it was chilly and windy.

@seascapescience.bsky.social We had so many sweet artists learning about our endangered right whales & the copepods they need to survive. We only talked to the parents about vessel strikes because I didn’t want to traumatize the kids.
They all picked a whale to color, it was really lovely!

You bet! What your organization is doing to educate the public about the dangers of the cruise ship industry all up and down the coast of Maine is important work, and getting Maine's children involved is key.

Earth Day itself spread because kids learned about it in school and took it home.

Honestly, Robin, it is beginning to feel like a shell game to me. The continual movement of money to keep the port tethered to these cruise climate catastrophes.
It is critical to conduct an objective cost benefit analysis at this point.

A vicious circle of self aggrandisement of port owners and the companies that have to constantly strengthen the port infrastructure. Why does the City and State allow this?

2 days ago 3 3 1 0

Thank you so much for your support!
We met so many people yesterday concerned about the catastrophic environmental impacts of cruise ships.
People are alarmed about the visual degradation of the port, their concern for whales, Casco Bay, being overrun by tourists & the air they breathe every day.

I don’t even know what to say anymore… Two cruise ships so far this season — both emitting a huge amount of pollution over our community and our beautiful city. I’m crushed it’s happening again this year. #yyjpoli #climatecrisis

Photo - "Norwegian Aura Floated Out." The photo shows a large crowd of people on a dock which is across the stern of the ship, on a sunny day. They are miniature in comparison to the massive ship. The ship's superstructure is complete, but not yet fitted out with windows and refinements, which will be completed at another location.

Cruise ships keep getting bigger, and bigger.

No matter climate change, and the non-necessity of cruise travel. It is wholly discretionary travel.

Photo & article are about Norwegian Cruise lines biggest ship yet. Note the scale, people vs. ship.

Two cruise ships so far in 2026:
Norwegian Jade & Niewu Amsterdam. This is not good for our beautiful city. It’s Victoria’s dirty little secret. We have to collectively do something. We can’t allow this to continue unabated. Caring for our community & environment is health care. #yyj #climatecrisis

New research from Seattle Cruise Control:
The annual climate pollution generated by Seattle's cruise business is now half as big as the annual climate pollution generated by the entire city of Seattle!
