I want to talk to you about cycling and hip arthritis
It surprises a lot of people, and needs to be more widely understood
I have a hip replacement next month, this thread is my experience, but I know others have found the same

As I predicted, the mandate for making course materials accessible has been delayed a year.
Adding this to my long list of examples for when instructors try to say that there are no extensions in the "real world"

I have been talking a lot about accessibility in Math course materials, and the answer is NO you SHOULDN'T use ChatGPT to write image descriptions, I don't care if you think it's hard to write them.
Wow, this is so greatΒ βΒ can't wait to experience it!
Does hockey count (removing the goal areas)?
When Pont Adolphe in Luxembourg was closed to reinforce the structure so that a tram line could be laid on top, a walking and cycling bridge was suspended beneath the arch structure to minimize inconvenience.
Now you can enjoy the sound of birds instead the sound traffic while crossing the bridge!
If I were a math association with a special focus on the teaching and learning of mathematics, I wouldn't be gloating that my signature math event frequently results in players getting a score of zero, but that's just me.
It's true! It's like the editor said "This sentence needs some explanation" and the author thought "Hmm, which part could I explain in less than a sentence."
Congratulations! I wish you happy returns :)

There are quantitative statistical models of this "indifference to the truth".
One can quantify the degree to which texts do this, and the LLM-generated texts stand out in a statistically significant way:

? fact check: no, students were and are heavily involved in this. I've been vetted by students, corresponded with and worked alongside students doing patrolling, they are probably the biggest single group doing the signal support stuff for example
I was showing my topology students this claymation video I made 18 years ago (wow!). Can you get from one configuration to the other without breaking a loop? Yes, you can! www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5fP...

@clarabiesel.bsky.social did a project involving the evolution of the Disney "storybook opening" intro!Β I love how the expectation that viewers would of course read the text for Sleeping Beauty turns into the Robin Hood rooster saying "ignore that, we've got our own version."
I tried to buy The Rewind Files through my local indie bookstore a few months ago and couldn'tΒ βΒ I'm so happy it's for the best of reasons!

I'm on the train back to DC β I call on all my colleagues to come back, too.
Congress must vote to end this war IMMEDIATELY.

Although AI improves performance during assisted sessions, performance drops sharply once it's removed. And relative to controls, AI-assisted participants also gave up more frequently on test problems.
π¨New preprint and our results are rather concerning..
We find the "boiling frog" equivalent of AI use. Using large-scale RCTs, we provide *casual* evidence that AI assistance reduces persistence and hurts independent performance.
And these effects emerge after just 10β15 minutes of AI use!

One hopes images like this, when paired with the knowledge that everything we burn ends up in that tiny slice of gasses, would help contextualize why we need to move away from energy sources we set on fire.
One hopes. Climate communicators should make some hay of this.
Yes! Parking availability (=occupancy <=85%) is a better target than parking turnover. Vacant spots when you arrive is what matters. In the busiest streets, even high turnover does not guarantee any open spots when you arrive. It's also easier for cities to monitor availability than turnover.
Headline in Le Monde: 'The president of the United States is clearly insane': Donald Trump's escalatory rhetoric raises questions over his mental health
This should be the headline in every newspaper.
Dems can all go back to DC, stay there, and make continuous demands, particularly against nuclear war, and it will be covered.
Political theatre changes minds. So much politics ARE theatre. Use it. Do it. Put on a show! Flood the news cycles. Make it all anyone talks about, and it will make a difference.
"This is a distraction" is just a lie. "They are taking your money and using it to commit criminal acts beyond our comprehension" is 100% true. I think we should tell the truth and not the lie. The latter also has the benefit of at least somewhat centering the issue of atrocities.
