If your chapters are too long, try to pinpoint the cause. It's likely either:
1) too much evidence
2) too much background
3) too many arguments
4) all of the above
Most writers' work can be condensed by 10-20 percent though aggressive line editing, but more than that, gotta address the above.
Constructive version! Most books published by US-based university presses feature chapters in the 8-12,000 word range, including all citation apparatus. The more crossover-y the book, the shorter the chapters. Readers really struggle with anything longer than 15K.
