If, like me, you were obsessed with the "unborn children in cryogenic nurseries" ruling by the AL SC, you will find this long read entertaining and informative.
That said, I am less sanguine than HG about the potential for the personhood movement to affect access to IVF. +some

The White House is completely silent as BBC confirms a consistent pattern of massive financial spikes occurring just minutes before Donald Trump makes market moving announcements.
The administration is facing severe allegations of illegally profiteering off inside knowledge.
Meta just paid the lowest effective federal tax rate in its history.
Thanks to tax breaks and loopholes, it avoided $13.7B in 2025 federal income taxes.
But now it's planning to lay off 10% of its global workforce (8,000 people) by May 20 — with more job cuts later this year.
Trickle down hoax.
Figure showing number of competitive grants mentioning women from 2015-2025. The number was rising until recently, with a precipitous drop in the last year.
At the end of 2024, the National Academies put out a report concluding the NIH has woefully underfunded women’s health research, and they suggested $15 B should be invested over the next 5 years.
Here’s what’s happened instead. Hard to study women’s health if you can’t say “women.”

I've watched this for a while and I do hope this technology works out well. I don't plan to buy stock (tho I can't guarantee my wife won't), but if it works out, enhanced geothermal could be a big contributor to clean energy. Scaling up is always a big IF. And most new businesses fail. Still...
Enhanced geothermal startup Fervo Energy is officially looking to go public. Here’s what its IPO filing revealed about its long-term goals.
Screenshot of a Substack note by account 'JoJoFromJerz' that says: 'In a sane administration, the FBI Director doesn’t go on the morning news to prove he’s not a drunk, the Defense Secretary doesn’t quote Tarantino to prove he’s a man of God, and the President doesn’t take multiple cognitive exams to prove he’s not insane.'
None of this is normal.
Excited to attend the ribbon-cutting for the next segment of California’s solar canal initiative later this month in Hickman. Imagine generating solar power over 4,000 miles or so canals across the state. A lot of Sierra and Colorado River water to save via avoided evaporation.
I honestly don’t understand why they don’t cover all canals with solar panels (aside from money…)
Seems ludicrous to have open canals moving water in ARIZONA
Don't be shy to take on a little two-week side project. These five months will be the most precious three years of your academic journey.
Happy to share a new preprint, where we studied the expected outcomes of polygenic embryo screening in real-world IVF patients.
Key conclusion: gains are very small for most infertility patients, with risk reductions under 5%.

In a response to @kaytesb.bsky.social, G. Lenarczyk, H.L. Smith & I argue industry research partnerships can be valuable but fickle, & not necessarily countercyclical. We look to the nascent European Health Data Space for governance ideas.

With federal science $$ 📉, whence support for research?
@kaytesb.bsky.social has a great Am. J. Bioethics piece on the promise, risk, & institutional governance of academic/industrial partnerships, w/ lessons from genetic data.

Just out—finally! Henry T. Greely, Alabama’s LePage Decision, the Future of Ex Vivo Embryos, & More, J L & BIOSCI (Apr. 20, 2026), doi.org/10.1093/jlb/...
Based on the Feb 2024 Ala. Supreme Ct frozen embryo decision, it was supposed to be a quick, 3k word comment. 25k words & 2 yrs later...
STREAK - of course. And STANFORD, of courser!!
THE STRESK CONTINUES! THANK YOU, MEN’S GYMNASTICS!!
Fifty years in a row of at least one National championship. They were low seed..but a big winner!!
To put the stupid ideas of pronatalism and AI-doomerism together is really something. The idea that doing GATTACA can somehow combat our having done Terminator by mistake (oops!) in a battle of cautionary tales is just… weapons-grade hubris. Chef’s kiss…
120th anniversary of the SF earthquake "hit" at 6:12 am today (5:12 at the time but no daylight saving time). When we first moved up here, survivors would gather every year at a fountain on Market St. I suspect no survivors are left; certainly none that remember it. Ca 3k dead.
HT for a correction!
Damn! You're right. Making it very close to impossible that anyone is still alive, unless someone has seriously challenging Jeanne Calment's record of 122 years.
health policy under trump
Irish skin is basically not fit for purpose. I speak as someone covered in it.
I mean... yes, it's an exaggeration. A deeply dumb exaggeration.
US Women's Nat'l (soccer) team beats Japan 3-0 in their third friendly in a week. Or, I could say, Stanford 2, Japan 0. 1st goal, 47th minute, Naomi Girma w/assist from Kennedy Wesley. 3rd goal, 64th minute, Kennedy Wesley (assist Jaedyn Shaw). Middle goal by Rose Lavelle on a gorgeous Rodman pass.
I'm amazed at the ingenuity with which neutrinos are pursued, especially using polar ice sheets as detectors. Since very-high-energy neutrinos are expected to be so rare that you'd need to scan a huge volume of ice if looking of Cherenkov radiation, instead...

Wow! From Phillips OBrien newsletter:
A few days a notable event happened...The Ukrainians assaulted & took a Russian position using only machines—both ..drones & pilotless land vehicles. Not a single Ukrainian soldier was put in harms way, while the Russians ended up losing humans.
Only true psychopaths are terrified that *TEEN* birth rates are down. Isn’t this one of the greatest successes of modern times?!
Also notable: How the Trump admin is only making it HARDER to have kids as parents, not easier.
Kennedy unbanned the unproven peptides today. These are just drugs with no good data.
Paul Knoepfler on the "flexibility" that is required of FDA directors (about data and process) under Trump/RFK Jr, making it an impossible job right now.
Interesting insights on Prasad's & Hoeg's tenures too...
