Rep. Analilia Mejia didn’t come to play.
She went back to the Ku Klux Klan Act of 1871.
Then brought it straight to now.

If there’s one thing about New Jersey, it’s that we elect fighters.
Excited to welcome a fighter to our ranks! Can’t wait to partner with Analilia Mejia make life better in NJ.💜
"As her first official acts in office, Mejia signed onto a discharge petition led by fellow New Jersey Rep. Donald Norcross (D-Camden) reforming the National Labor Relations Act"

The Yale report on trust in higher education has some good recommendations for reforms in many areas that I hope Yale and other schools implement.
But its diagnosis is oddly silent about what I suspect is the most important force driving the decline in trust in higher education: political attack.
People need to step back on this Yale report on mistrust in higher education. It is a report on public opinion that does not actually engage in any public opinion research. Rather, they talked to a bunch of elites with strong opinions about higher education.

This week is the first at the Daily News since Heath Freeman's Alden Capital laid off our entire print production staff.
It's embarrassing to open the paper we work so hard for each day and find mistakes like this.
Is this the level of editing New Yorkers can count on going forward?

The new platform from AFT & @aaup.org is focused on:
🎓Restored funding
🎓Freedom to learn
🎓Shared governance: Ensuring faculty and staff—not corporate administrators—make final decisions on curriculum, research priorities and institutional priorities.
🎓Labor reform
UTLA's 150-member Bargaining Team reached a tentative two-year agreement w/the district with big wins that the team enthusiastically recommends to UTLA members for ratification.
Higher education workers deserve the same collective bargaining rights as other state workers.
Sign the petition to urge Governor Spanberger to amend HB1263 and SB378 to restore collective bargaining rights for higher education workers!

Over the past year the US economy has added 680,000 healthcare and social assistance jobs and lost 420,000 jobs in all other industries.
"Results suggest that labor market responses beyond the canonical model that focuses on parents alone lead to sizable economic returns to early childhood education investments."
My book, The Wage Standard, is dedicated to Frank Morley, someone who taught me a lot about economics when I was in grad school. Frank worked at the Harvard Economics Department.

Has Dan Goldman ever walked a picket line? Lots of opportunities in his district since he entered congress, including @sbworkersunited.org and CFU @uaw.org? Curious as to whether he's been on the line with striking workers
"Striking faculty returned to work Wednesday having won 'the highest minimum salaries of any unionized full-time, non-tenure track faculty in the country,' Brendan Hogan, a philosophy professor and spokesperson for CFU-UAW, said in a statement."

photograph or a poster on cream colored paper. "Dear President Ambar, we are writing to you on a typewriter that is over 70 years old. This is a machine that we all know well. With it, we misspell words without the crutch of spell check or generative AI and we think intently about every phrase we pound out. As we force ourselves, for once, to slow down, we engage in a cognitive dialogue with ourselves. We do not seek perfection because we know that education is about the growing and challenging of our young minds' potential, not the chasing of institutional 'gold-star' approval. We do not believe that your so-called 'Year of AI Exploration; providing enterprise ChatGPT and Google Gemini subscriptions to every Oberlin student aligns with our college's founding principles. You claim that this year will be one of experimentation, not adoption. But even just one semester of accepted (encouraged even) chat bot use will jettison our student body down a lazy and irredeemable tunnel of intellectual destruction. We are a college grounded in learning and labor, which now risks straying from these rooted ideals. With ChatGPT at the helm, our emails, essays, and discussion posts will be generated for us, not by us. And let's not fool ourselves. This is precisely what these platforms will be used for by our busy, anxious student body. We see your vision for this year as.advancing the college's 'businessification'--an alarming trend also seen in the takeover of our beloved library cafe by a 'bookstore' with no books in stock and an app replacing customer service. In one instance, the college assumes we want efficiency at all costs through automated rather than hand pulled coffee. In the other lies the false belief that we simply desire to turn in an essay, regardless of how little we've written of it." there's more that doesn't fit in the 2000 character limit :(
OH MY HEART...the Oberlin Luddites Reject "The Year of AI Exploration"! 💚
Using Canvas agentic AI to do your work for you signals that your work is worth less than it was prior to that act. The idea that this will, long term, free faculty time is belied by every single thing we know about the history of labor automation. It either puts you out of work, or you work more.
Perhaps fitting that Contract Faculty United @uaw.org at NYU, just won an amazing tentative agreement, on March 25th, the day we commemorate the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire, on NYU's own campus. Solidarity forever.
I assume @seiu509.bsky.social will be bringing a massive delivery of rainbow flags to BU imminently?
On strike, shut it down! New York is a union town! The solidarity is massive on the Contract Faculty United picket at NYU! @uawregion9a.bsky.social
