if your creative practice is "AI-driven" i consider you my aesthetic, political, and intellectual enemy. just make a twine game with your own two hands and a crummy laptop. i promise you that you'll care 1000% more about the messy human process that emerges, and so will anyone who plays it

oh fuck right off, the last thing I want is some "literary" AI grifter game sharing the same name as my itch handle

Image editing and the library scanner-to-Decker pipeline Since my last post, I've been making increasingly steady progress on the Decker prototype. It's good to see, looking back, that my impulse to lean into Twine...

A breakdown of the messy, imprecise, duct-taped-together process I use to get century-old prints into something feasible within Decker:

The remake's inclusion of a toggle for the original soundtrack felt like an admission of this by the devs, but they couldn't justify making a toggle for just "playing the original." I liked the remake like I might like a theme park ride of the game - visit once, but always return to the original.

As a massive SMRPG fan I wholly agree. I really wish the remake had also come with an emulation of the original or something like that - there's a weird and important somberness to the original aesthetic that goes out the window with the glossy revamp.

After plenty of bonking my head and overthinking Decker's syntax, we've finally got draggable characters in the Toy Theatre Imagination Kit! (it makes me want to stage some toy theatre JRPG battle scenes but that's gonna have to be a Fun Summer Gag when I Have The Time)

Will do! Any tool that helps me make a little game on my morning train commute steals my heart.

Wow! This is sick! I'm impressed with how intuitive it is to fiddle with it on my phone.

I love a well-tuned, "the UI is kinda physical" design surprise like this in a game.

it feels like such a massive concession of ground for ppl to be constantly defending "learning" and "gaining experience" as good things. like the teacher is letting their worst student stop the whole class dead every day.

It's a truly excellent book, and galvanized me both as a fledgling gamemaker and in terms of the research that prompted me to go back to grad school.

The new wave of AI-generated/assisted digital lit strikes me the same as the Google autocomplete poem fad 10-15 years ago. Often framed as "repurposing hegemonic surveillance as critique" but in actuality saying "I'm fine hegemonic surveillance as long as it make us little toys every so often"
