Powering the hidden tendrils of the information age

According to Jonathan Koomey (2007), the computer-servers in US data-
centres and their associated plumbing (air conditioners, backup power sys-
tems, and so forth) consumed 0.4 kWh per day per person – just over 1%
of US electricity consumption. That’s the consumption figure for 2005,
which, by the way, is twice as big as the consumption in 2000, because the
number of servers grew from 5.6 million to 10 million.

Having another read of David MacKay's book "Sustainable Energy without the hot air" 20 years on, here's an interesting stat (it was 4% in 2024)

Graphic showing the relationship with cities shown as dots on a triangle.

This is interesting — a recent study of mode share (the % share of transportation trips by car, transit, walking, biking etc) relative to city size and income levels in almost 800 cities in 61 countries. Interesting results. HT @davidzipper.bsky.social

Some people get into journalism because they’re skeptical of power, and others do so because they’re impressed by it. Moments like this are clarifying with respect to who’s who.

It is really really sinking in for me the degree to which LLMs are the ultimate expression of right wing anti-intellectualism. Its proponents are literally mocking the idea that anyone would ever want to learn anything, know anything, develop any actual skill, or have a thought of their own.
