The cover of The Complete Persepolis by Marianne Satrapi.

Now would be a good time for anyone who wants to learn about recent Iranian history to read this. It is well worth your time and money (I am sure your local library has it if you don’t want to purchase it).

I try to be hyperaware of ableist language while translating. It’s usually the obvious choice bc it's so baked into English. But it's hurtful and enforces negative associations. It's also just bad writing and lazy as all get out.

When you reach for a word like “crazy”, think about what you *really* want to say. Is it impossible? Frustrating? Absurd? Infuriating? What do you *mean* when you reflexively grab onto a word like “lame”? Bad? Boring? Ugly? Tedious? Say what you actually mean and you’ll be a better writer for it.

A distant kingfisher in flight against a textured concrete wall.

Went for a photo walk in the beginnings and found a very cooperative kingfisher.
The second shot was taken off-the-hip, spray-and-pray style when he took flight and I really kind of like it.

14 Young Skiers Killed as Bus Crashes, Plunges in Japan A bus carrying young skiers to a popular resort slid off a mountain road in Japan on Friday, killing 14 and injuring 27.

10 years ago today, a bus crash in Nagano Prefecture killed 13 university students and two drivers. A friend of mine was among them, and I still remember the immense shock I felt when I saw her name on a news report while preparing for breakfast.

I talk about this when I teach translation, but the choice to keep a word in its native language must be deliberate--and not simply to exoticize.

You are attempting to introduce a new word into the English language. And by doing so, you are asking the reader to do the work you are being paid for.

Damion Searls: ‘Nothing is untranslatable. Anything left untranslated is what you’ve decided doesn’t matter anyway’ | The Booker Prizes In this extract from his book The Philosophy of Translation, the International Booker Prize-shortlisted translator explains how the boundaries of language are always permeable

Translators read to decide what’s important and what’s less important, then re-create what they’ve decided is important; the debates about whether to translate literally or for the overall sense, whether to domesticate a term or leave it foreign sounding, whether to translate rhymed and metered poetry with rhyme and meter, and all the rest are pointless, because – obviously – it depends.

Finally reading this great essay on what translators do and what language is! This part in particular hit home for me.

Australia social media ban: Teens share their views one month on Some say they've lost interest in social media since the ban, while others say nothing has changed.

I did use talk360 recently on my iphone, but ran into an issue where a call center I rang wasn't able to hear me - if they transferred me to another call center it was fine though.

I'm with Aeon Mobile and so used their app for international calls which should be cheaper (yet to be billed)
