The box office success may imply otherwise, but there's *always* been a disconnect between critical/audience reception across all media.
Hence why it's all the more disappointing these films aren't anything but cynical exercises in brand management. Movies are clearly not Miyamoto's forte.
I was initially hesitant to comment because of funky translation, but coming off the quote here...yeah, this mirrors my thoughts to a T.
I hardly begrudge Miyamoto for having fun expanding Nintendo's media empire during his twilight years, but what works for video games doesn't work for films.
That said, I *am* dying to know the rationale for some of these other lists.
"Antisemitism"? Sure, whatever, keep pretending Israel's not conducting a genocide. I'm glad not to have your company.
"Gaming Drama" for "Goobergate and friends"? Umm...
Happy to report I'm on the infamous anti-AI list. 🫡
I'm not too broken up if people block me--we all have our respective boundaries 'n such, so I'd never probe.
I'd already blocked the Why Wizard so I didn't have to witness his signature jackassery, though, lol. Sorry to beat you to the punch.
Taking inspiration from the movies is sensible *especially* given how they're box-offices smashes, but I'd rather they keep their respective continuities separate. It's not like Sonic suddenly had Officer Tom show up as his foster father.
It's funner that they explore different ideas.
I get Mario employs loose canon as per the "theater troupe" concept, so they could just retcon whatever at any time, but it's difficult to reconcile with the storybook being right there.
It's like telling me the Koopalings aren't Bowser's kids anymore--it's too hardwired into my brain to dislodge.
Mmm, not crazy about this. Even putting aside the themes of Rosalina's storybook, how would this even work? She's centuries old.
The Galaxy movie may have slipshod storytelling, but at least they planted the seeds to make this twist *kinda* work. Not so much here when there's actual canon.
I just miss fansites, man.
childhood is when you relate to moon child
adulthood is when you realize you got the power to be his friend
Whether or not the two things are actually correlated, it is incredibly funny that Bluesky started experiencing near daily tech fuck ups right after the team started bragging about using vibe coding
i love living in the first village of an rpg man. friendly neighbors, music is chill af, we even got that one kid we adopted into the village of whom the ancient prophecy was written about. anyway there’s a big ceremony tomorrow can't wait to still be alive after it
an image of the official amiibo website showing the Waddle Dee Kirby Air Riders amiibo mistakenly labelled Sylux - Metroid Prime 4 Beyond Series
feels like an especially irresponsible moment to ignore BDS when Game Pass is the easiest, level one way to participate in the boycott and BDS just called for renewed pressure after Israel passed a law on executing Palestinian and Arab in prisons that use Microsoft cloud services
Chat, what's more pathetic: still glazing Musk as a supergenius following his social media circus/destructive white supremacy, or pretending AI would prioritize the jobs of poor, defenseless CEOs like Zelnick here?
We get *1* game that's actively trying to showcase positive masculinity, a dude who has well regulated emotions and is trying to be supportive to his adoptive robot daughter in the same way that his adoptive parents were to him - and it's literally just this, it's not even subtext - and this happens
Splatoon Raiders looks fire.
There is no way to support SNK, Mod Retro etc and divest yourself from the abhorrent actions of their owners. Every penny you put in their pockets helps to keep them doing what they do outside of selling some games & hardware.
One begets the other. You become a part of it. No ifs, no buts.
The Columbine massacre was on this date in 1999. Instead of energizing our country to get gun violence under control, it kicked off a new normal. One of the best explanations ever of journalism's destructive impact on mass shootings came from Roger Ebert in his review of Gus Van Sant’s “Elephant.”
happy 20th anniversary to Mother 3!
You think they'd take this as a wake up call.
Beautiful article, Marc. Mother 3 is (sadly) more relevant than ever, but as the game reminds us: "those who don't remember history are doomed to repeat it."
Hooray!
if you can play Mother 3, you should, it's a perfect game about how nostalgia turns you into a monster, and the corrosive power of capitalism
(ideally play it on something precise enough to make the rhythm game battle system timings work)
I didn't write a big thing for Mother 3's anniversary, because I already wrote a big thing for Mother 3 years back. Everything within still applies. One of the best bits of storytelling Nintendo has ever done. A tale of loneliness, selfishness, greed, and the destructiveness of capitalism's cycles.
As always, the tell in these smarmy, self righteous “I told you so” tantrums is how the person levying them downplays the egregiousness of Harriss’ failings. Forgive me for being so “narrow minded” in thinking the mass murder of 100,000 people is simply “10% of Kamala’s views.”
There's more than enough town-building games vying for my attention these days, and I'm not wasting my time drawing a doomed Chewbacca when I could playing Pokopia instead.
I'd say if you're an artist, it's a gold mine for comedy/creativity, but I don't want to forget who I'm talking to. 😅
For me, it's the step back from convenience--if you're not artistically-inclined, QR Codes were an instant gateway into enjoying a wealth of familiar/clever creations.
3DS Tomodachi Life was a game that respected your time; this one doesn't, and I've already come to dread playing it.
