My Favorite Films of 2025 This was one of the most difficult blog posts I've written. Perhaps it's because I no longer write regularly. Once upon a time, I had a weekly film column that needed my attention. Now I can barely find time to see the films I need to discuss at our weekly Philadelphia Cinema Salon. One thing is certain, fewer people are venturing out to the theaters.

What movies are worthy of your time? The Life of Chuck The Materialists There are fewer people going to see movies in theaters. Some of that is due to changing viewing habits. There are more choices, endless choices it seems, to stream on TV. It's also true that many films are marketed as Big Blockbuster Entertainment...and fail to deliver much entertainment. If you're looking for a movie that's definitely worth your time and money, there are lots of choices available at your local theater.

Let’s Champion Independent Cinema! A fun double feature? “The Wedding Banquet” and “A Nice Indian Boy” I've been hearing movie fans complain that "there's nothing to see" at the movie theaters. Of course, what they might mean, is that there are no BIG blockbuster movies that they feel compelled to go see on the big screen. Or perhaps, they live somewhere with no art-house cinemas, and the local multiplex is only screening horror films or children's programming?

There's such a tone of sadness to the CBC reporting right now. Adrienne Arsenault says, “I feel like the whole country, all of us, are getting both a history lesson and a politics lesson and an economics lesson and a lesson in heartache.”

Possibly baking my way to happiness? I bought Meyer Lemons and made Lemon blueberry muffins, sugar cookies w/lemon icing and there’s a ball of lemon shortbread chilling in my fridge. #happiness #baking #givingitaway

Actual photo of a less-appetizing real version of Parmesan Prosciutto Toast. But it was delicious!

Great breakfast at #FirstWatch restaurant. Tried their Parmesan Prosciutto Toast (w/o prosciutto). Perfectly toasted sharply sour sourdough w/ creamy eggs, warm arugula and lots of Parmesan plus a side of fruit. It was perfect. And Juan, my server, was excellent!

2024: The Year of Fierce Female Performances There were some BIG disappointments in 2024. Films with major directors or all-star casts or both, that were highly anticipated only to debut to derision. Truckloads of production money or marketing dollars could’ve been better spent on crafting multiple pictures. What saved this lackluster year was for me, the incredible, raw, powerful performances by actors that surprised me. There were some audacious turns in small films that blew me away.
