A #Houdini setup for reducing viewport visibility of 1000's of scattered objects, for smooth viewport performance, using 'render' and 'proxy' purpose. To remove the conflict of doubling up of purpose between asset and instances, I just pruned the corresponding purpose for the instancing part

Some more lighting tweaks:
- Changed the eye-ding setup to be reflected sphere lights instead of small disc geo constrained to the eyes anim.
- Additional hdri reflection in the sclera.
- Added a cool tone light to shape the LHS of her face
- Reduced SSS on arms

Here's a demo of layering usd files, and working with variants in Solaris. When I receive a new alembic animation cache from Maya, I can process it through this setup to ensure materials are consistent between shots, with the flexibility of variants if needed #Houdini

Before and after:
Testing using 'houdini hair procedural' in Solaris to add subtle cloth fibres to the trousers, and help break up the straight edge on the trouser geometry. Combined with 'houdini preview procedurals' where hairs are calculated at render time from the guide curves

This only works because the base usd assets (buildings from Kitbash) are not setup with a proxy/render purpose. Otherwise it would become a proxy within a proxy, and I can't get the best of both working... any ideas anyone? :)

Experimenting with setting a proxy and render purpose on an instancer setup with 10000's of objects that slows down the viewport. Proxy version only displays a limited amount of objects to keep the viewport snappy #Houdini #Solaris

Nice! I like the interactivity with a slider. Have you tried the vex functions 'split' and 're_replace'? Split is useful for breaking up a long string into components by a character of your choice.. normally i'd use [-1] to get the last component. Re_replace for removing numbers :)

Step 2: Sort though loads of nasty Maya object file paths!
Step 3: Make a nicely organised Solaris stage and hierarchy
Step 4: Asset materials with MaterialX
