Today is Bicycle Day, the 83rd anniversary of the first LSD trip taken by Swiss chemist Albert Hofmann on April 19, 1943. He hopped on his bike and rode home from the lab after taking what he thought was a small dose.
I’m celebrating with just a straight bike ride, but you do you.

RE: the age of housing in Providence; IIRC, Elorza’s housing plan had a survey that said that there were still inhabited units without indoor plumbing.

the last decade in uruguay has been unreal, for example

you wouldn't finish a nuclear powerstation in that amount of time, and it would cost you a LOT more

I tried to explain to somebody about why sometimes people on bikes do things drivers might not understand in order to ensure our own survival and was informed that we are not actually entitled to survival.

Which felt kind of aggressive.

A man stands in a war-damaged area surrounded by rubble and partially destroyed buildings under a clear blue sky. Overlaid text reads: β€œThe president’s budget request includes a $445 billion, or 42 percent, increase for war. This brings the total war budget to an unprecedented $1.5 trillion. That’s $1,500,000,000,000.” The final number is circled in red. The National Priorities Project logo appears at the bottom.

Last week, the President said that there's no money for things like Medicaid and childcare.

Then, he proceeds to request a $1.5 TRILLION budget for war and weapons.

Make it make sense.

yea, we have such a weird obsession with means testing

Interesting: A new bill from Ward 8 CM Trayon White would allow low-income D.C. residents to perform community service as a means to pay off traffic camera fines. Each hour of service would be equivalent to the minimum wage ($17.95) off of what they owe in fines.

How the Bicycle Could End the Oil Crisis
How the Bicycle Could End the Oil Crisis YouTube video by AverageManOnaBike

A simple, effective solution to the energy crisis already exists, and it runs on two wheels. youtu.be/ybCZmiPzy3g?...

right? even a simple bike helmet which is NOT designed for motor veh crash mitigation would still prevent a lot of car head trauma!

2 weeks ago 0 0 0 0

you also send this admonition to ppl on stairs; elderly; when it's icy out; to baseball players; ppl in showers; etc., right? all of those activities are more likely to lead to a head injury than bicycling so i hope your concern for head safety is not selective only to bicyclists for some reason.

People in cities should see biking as a utility, not a hobby. If you don’t want running water or electricity in your home and wherever you go, feel free to be off grid and not partake, but everyone should by default have access to these things. Likewise, access to a bike and safe riding everywhere.

All ages and abilities - before & after (Bryant Ave S).

More streets should and *could*
look like this, simply by taking advantage of needed street reconstructions to not just replace an aging street, but to improve it for everyone.

A beautiful orange Specialized carbon gravel bike.

Something really good happened this week. A great NOAA climate scientist is retiring, because too demoralizing to work there now. I decided to fundraise to get him a gravel bike by emailing 80 colleagues (including some of you). 60 people donated 2x my goal, so I was able to get him this beauty. 😍

"delayed" absolutely is a fair description to use for something that was pulled off the ballot

2 weeks ago 1 0 0 0

they did, tho it's worth noting that many of those cities had historically had higher mode shares & even at the "low" points in the 1970s, still had ridership that would place them far & away as some of the best cities in america/canada in modern times.

the big issue was & continues to be funding. they *probably* should've upped the bond to $15b in 2008 & in hindsight, there was clearly unwarranted optimism about both add'l funding sources as well as price of construction. all the little changes & delays along the way didn't help either.

2 weeks ago 1 0 0 0

there wasn't no plan whatsoever as they had been doing planning work since the creation of the authority in 1996 & there state had done several studies before that too. while there were still some unknowns at the time of the ballot measure, the broad contours were known or otherwise mandated by it.

2 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

right, the market doesn't actually believe that it is anywhere near as beneficial/slam dunk as some ppl like to believe, otherwise it would gain funding.

2 weeks ago 1 0 1 0

it was actually years late. original ballot measure was supposed to go to voters in 2002 but got pulled after gov davis got recalled. also, tho they did largely ignore governator's complete defunding, the legislature refused to adequately fund the authority in the years leading up to the vote.
