The First WORLD FENCING LEAGUE is happening April 25th!!! I'M GEEKING!!!
Japanese engineers developed this "Sword Tip Visualisation" tracking technology specifically for this event that will make it so much easier for the average person to see what's going on!
I MUST WATCH THIS ENTIRE TOURNAMENT

Welcome home, Willow and Suri. 🦦💙🦦
Excited to attend the ribbon-cutting for the next segment of California’s solar canal initiative later this month in Hickman. Imagine generating solar power over 4,000 miles or so canals across the state. A lot of Sierra and Colorado River water to save via avoided evaporation.
it is legitimately unfathomable how the US squandered its significant EV early lead primarily through entirely backwards short-sighted policy decisions in support of the oil industry which likely has already set the stages of the US auto industry's demise. a death in slow motion.
i remember my sister saying something like, "there is nothing you can stockpile that will ever be as important to survival as community"
(the wrong lesson to take from this, i'm sure, but i was relieved to hear there might be a place for personality hires in the post-apocalypic social order)
Imagine, if you will, working with dozens & dozens of representatives of underserved communities, promising them loans & grants that could change their lives, working out all the details ... only to have to call all of them & say, "just kidding, the president took the money back." I can't even.
Today on Volts: Climate United was designed to disperse $7 billion worth of climate & clean-energy funds to underserved communities. Just as it had begun pushing money out the door, Trump killed it & rescinded the money. I talk with the woman who designed it & is fighting in court to preserve it.
Oh, and PS, if you live in Seattle & haven't been to the new aquarium addition yet -- the big tropical pool -- you really, really gotta go. It is *spectacular*. None of my pictures do it justice.
Here's some tropical creature that looks like a shark rear-ended a manta ray.
“It’s a dwarf planet!!!!”

on this 20th anniversary of mother 3, go read this interview from right after the first mother came out. it really is amazing
The reason this matters is that "Imagine Dragons released a live-service game" makes it seem like a cashgrab, but that does not appear to be the story here. These guys are lifelong gamers. The lead singer programs and releases his own iOS games as a hobby, without telling anyone!
Since this post is aggregating my Bloomberg column, I kinda feel the need to clarify that the Imagine Dragons game is not "live-service" (designed for recurring monetization). It's a $15 multiplayer shooter with no microtransactions.
Here's the original article: www.bloomberg.com/news/newslet...
Sitting here crying while after getting WhatsApped the photo on the right, so let me tell you a little story about how we got here from the photo on the left and why repatriation research matters!
As noted a couple weeks ago, stood to reason that Apple, despite their large ownership stake and satellite deal, would actually *like* Amazon taking over Globalstar... thoughts.spyglass.org/i/192991624/...
the cat is standing down in memory of his past life as an Italian anti-fascist guerrilla
going back to the amazon, the area has some of the worst and nutrient deficient soils on earth. so how did they get around that? well they made their own soil of course =D.
If you see rich dark fertile soil in the amazon, somebody made that lol.

Photo of a peregrine falcon about to teach a brown pelican an important life lesson: keep your distance from the cliffs at Torrey Pines in the spring! The peregrine's talons are out and her eyes are locked onto the pelican's beak. The pelican has its wings extended and is banking away, but that's like a minivan trying to outmaneuver a Lotus: ain't gonna happen.
Photo of a peregrine falcon grabbing a brown pelican by the beak with her talons. The pelican is not a fan of this game of "Got yer nose!" and is banking away. Fortunately the falcon is far enough out that most of the impact force will glance off and the pelican can keep flying.
More peregrine on pelican action from yesterday. Don't come into her house: she'll drag you out by the nose.

I supplied the “Climate change is kicking our butts” quote for this AP story. There’s going to be a lot more butt-kicking…
"March’s persistent heat was so intense that the continental US registered its most abnormally hot month in 132 years of records ... Not only was it the hottest March on record for the US, but the amount it was above normal beat any other month in history for the Lower 48 states."
Probably fine.
I'm telling you, the solution to many problems in education is to hire school librarians (at a liveable wage, with administrative support, and adequate resources). Your students don't need an LLM, they need a librarian.
"Turns out students aren't great at asking questions well." No fucking shit. Literally any educator could tell you that. 90% of my job as a high school librarian is trying to figure out what kids actually want versus what question they asked.
In some games you might want to pause the gameplay but still allow camera movement, unit selection, issuing orders, etc. I usually call that "command". So there's then three things going on - rendering, command, gameplay. For pause, don't call the gameplay update.
I always have the rendering and the gameplay in completely separate functions in the update loop, so when the game is paused you just stop calling the gameplay update function, but keep calling the rendering.
of course the greatest achievement in pause history occurred when battletoads played a very short, repetitive beat when you paused the game: youtu.be/JRPXRHS4XNQ?...
