To this day, the Basureros keep a watchful eye on old blood and new, ensuring another coup never rises again.

This event spurred Marcos to accelerate his plans to tighten his rule, and on September 23, 1972, he declared Martial Law. The puentes slipped back into shadow, their hidden societies and aristocracies fading into myth as history moved on.

Puentes would never again be allowed to participate in politics or nation-building; in exchange, their survival through secrecy would be assured.

Fearing further violence, the Basureros parleyed with the government and negotiated to have the incident swept under the rug, erasing public knowledge of the Encantos, puentes, and the supernatural.

The Basureros arrived quickly in an attempt to resolve the crisis, but they were too late. Of the seven Encantos, only three survivors were recorded: Mayari, Apolaki, and Salamancera. To this day, they have not been found.

After a long and arduous confrontation at Malacañang Palace, the Encantos nearly claimed victory - until a turning point in the conflict shifted momentum to government forces.

As the inevitability of Marcos’s authoritarian rise grew clearer, however, the Encantos were forced to act. In 1972, they staged a coup to overthrow the administration.

They ultimately decided to continue their duties but to avoid further political entanglements, steering clear of what they considered a game of thrones.

In the wake of the exposé of the Jabidah Massacre, public and political opinion began to turn sharply against Marcos. Even among themselves, the Encantos debated withdrawing support for the government.

For a while, the peace held. The Encantos fought threats both supernatural and mundane - sometimes on behalf of the government, more often for the sake of the people. They saw themselves as guardians of the masses first and defenders of the country second. However, everything changed in 1968.

the beautiful and deadly vigilante named “Mayari”; the mysterious “Ikapati”, maiden of the woods; the ever-cheerful “Tala”, said to resolve any conflict with a smile; and the fiery “Apolaki,” along with his wife, who never took a godly name and instead preferred her old moniker, “Salamancera.”

Among the founding members of the Encantos Sagrados were some of the strongest puentes of the time, each committed to Bathala’s mission. They included the powerful and boisterous man who would be called “Amanikable,” serving as his personal enforcer;

He believed that drawing on local mythology could help combat communism and foreign influence - two of the greatest threats he saw to the cultural integrity and stability of the Philippines.

To support this goal, he created an identity for the group rooted in mythology, giving members titles based on Filipino gods and demigods. Naturally, as the first, he became “Bathala.”

The man who would become known as Bathala, who up to that point had been regarded as a simple businessman, revealed himself as a puente and gathered allies who shared his vision. Together, they founded the Encantos Sagrados with the aim of protecting the people from threats both within and without.

Ultimately, with the promise of government and Basurero oversight, the Encantos Sagrados were allowed to become the public face of the supernatural.

For the first time, puentes came to public awareness with the intention of inspiring heroism and nationalism through government cooperation. This initiative was heavily criticized by the Grand Chair of the Basureros, who had kept the existence of puentes hidden from the public eye for centuries.

In 1966, with the promise of nationwide safety and security, the Coconut Tree Accords were signed by then-president Ferdinand Marcos Sr. and the Encantos Sagrados, a group of superhero-puentes led by an individual publicly identifying as “Bathala.”
