How to Bring Computer Science to Your Elementary Classroom Young students can learn to see themselves as creators through coding activities that spark curiosity and creativity.

“Introducing computer science early helps students develop key habits of thinking: curiosity, problem-solving, and resilience,” @schiccatano.bsky.social writes.

Help elementary students see themselves as creators with these coding activities! 🧑‍💻

Teachers: what’s your eval process like? I’m in a right-to-work state w/ no union power + a complex system that feels disconnected from real teaching. Is this common? Any best practices or wins where you are?

Screenshot of an email that reads Good Morning, Mrs. Bond
FINALLY!!! Thank you so much for allowing me the time to turn this in. While a more responsible student would have this turned in earlier, and probably with better quality. I am not that student. Lately I feel like my life has fallen apart and l've lost interest in a lot of things I used to love to do. If I had it my way, I would sleep until nighttime and then just stare at the ceiling in the dark to simulate sleeping. All this to say thank you for your effort. It is not every day where someone demands to hear my thoughts. It is more often where people ask me to shut up. Sometimes the things I say are nonsense, (well most of the time that is exactly what I am saying) but you've never told me that my thoughts weren't worth the time. While it was probably not ideal to wait an extra month for an assignment, I am completely grateful for the opportunity and time. I am even more grateful for your class, being my anchor and holding me to a reality that seems familiar. Thank you so much for being my teacher!! I think everyone deserves to know how important they are, so I suppose this email doubles as a reminder that you are important!!

Shared with permission from my student to highlight 3 things.

1) as much as we’re going through it, the children are GOING THROUGH IT
2) Choosing grace has never made me ashamed. The paper was stunning.
3) if you’re turning something in a month late, this is how you do it 😂

“A kid said something funny in class today and the entire room, myself included, burst out laughing and could not stop for several very long, very joyous minutes. I was in tears.

That won’t show up in any data sheet, but it matters too.” —Marcus Luther, Teacher

@npclassroom.bsky.social I am so excited for your book!!! Perfect timing for teacher summer reading! I have some requests though! I need an audiobook version! I also need a book study message board or something so my co-teachers and I can work through it together asynchronously over the summer!

The most amazing things happen for kids as they make friends and grow in confidence. This is the biggest way I make an impact. Once a kid feels valued and capable THEN they can learn and grow!

I think meeting emotional needs should be a priority for all in schools! Teachers also need to be mentally and emotionally supported to deal with major behaviors too!

#EduSkyChat. Thanks for your time tonight and bearing with my tech concerns through my first chat! Thanks for all the help!

This is what I encounter too! Colleagues move mountains for struggling learners but want “behaviors” gone! It’s a hurdle!

Observation is THE BEST learning tool!!!

Really great point. A change in mentality from your kid/my kid your responsibility/my responsibility to ours …. Working towards true shared ownership and responsibility!!!

Also I think more staff would help. If everyone wasn’t stretched so thin. Maybe we wouldn’t need more time???? 🤷🏼‍♀️

It is true and I think often teachers think “big” behaviors need more thank this but I’m not sure they really do????

I’m a teacher and love to blame admin whenever possible lol 🤣 jk but they can not make more time in the day and the more planning time they give the less content time students have. Are their innovative ways to change how we plan?

Q2. How can we address systems and procedures to help kids with behaviors access the curriculum meaningfully?

1 year ago 3 2 2 0

#EduSkyChat A1. How can we work to view kids as kids not special education or general education when we can’t even view ourselves as just teachers? Is this an important point?

1 year ago 3 1 1 0

#EduSkyChat I’m a general education teacher. Currently teaching 5th grade. A1. I know open communication and shared goals is so important.
