NextGen’s 10th Anniversary, Spotlighting California’s Racial Equity Commission. 2020 - The global pandemic plagued our nation affected every demographic grouping in the United States and helped to clearly expose the legacy of structural racism and systemic inequity in state government programs and policies.
Advocates recognized that racism is a public health crisis and the disparities witnessed in the 1960s were still alive and well today. NextGen and equity leaders helped spearhead legislative efforts to create an Office of Racial Equity. 2022 - Although unsuccessful in the creation of the Office of Racial Equity, advocates helped create the state’s first Racial Equity Commission. One of the Commission’s mandates was to create a Racial Equity Framework for the state that helps support efforts to embed equity into policies and programs.
