We are deeply concerned by the news that CBP agents have shot two people in Portland. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families and we wish them a full recovery. We are at a dangerous moment when our national leaders are defending federal agents’ immunity from prosecution or any real consequence if they choose to harm us. Portlanders deserve the full facts of the situation and accountability from those responsible. We must get trustworthy and impartial answers about what has happened.
This incident and the killing of Renee Good in Minneapolis yesterday are part of a larger pattern of law enforcement violence, targeting Black and Brown and immigrant communities in particular, but threatening all of us. Police continue to rely on armed force as a primary response to situations. When CBP shoots civilians in a Portland neighborhood, it underlines how normalized the use of lethal force is. Lack of transparency, cops investigating cops, limited oversight, and paltry legal remedies erode public trust.
This shooting reflects how policing in our city and our country is shaped by militarization, over-broad discretion, and a culture that fails to prioritize human life and the safety of our communities. We must defend our community especially our neighbors who are being targeted by the administration. As Portlanders have shown in the past, we will keep each other safe and show up to defeat tyranny in a way that can inspire the nation.
