You can see a distinct alternating pattern to the movement of the parapodia, called "metachronal paddling". I think it's hypnotic.
Imagine living in a world with no solid surfaces for your whole life, just floating & swimming.

I'm deep down the rabbit hole on FROGFISH, 60 species of anglerfish in family Antennariidae.
They are deeply, utterly WEIRD & MARVELOUS.
Most walk on modified fins.
Others use jet propulsion.
Some are capable of air-breathing.
Some are "hairy", others blend perfectly in sargassum.

Tree snail! 🐌
As much as I loved making the i'iwi I think this guy was my fav of the bunch. Making the spiral pattern on the shell was fun. First snail I've ever made! ❤️

Yesterday I filmed several baby birds walking across a street directly at my camera and asked Bluesky to suggest music
Several dozen folks did
Some even dubbed music over the original clip.
I haven't been able to get this out of my head.
So I give you
A Bluesky exclusive:

A photograph of a mixed media Posca pen, Staedtler pigment liner and Prismacolour pencil illustration on Kraft card with a Posca pen resting on top of a green and gold embellished planner. The illustration shows a yellow sea bunny, a nudibranch, with the words Easter Bunny next to it. Signed Emily Jane Foster.

Faded post-it note that says "We hope this is what this is."
An old post-it note saying this is better found in a mineral collection (which it was) than, let's say, a virology lab.
Chiton, which is a mollusk with seven overlapping plates on its top surface, which in this one are brown and white patterned, but fringed by a black-white speckled fleshy "skirt." Chiton is on a craggy light-gray limestone surface, and two piles of 7-9 little gray pellets are directly behind and below the chiton. A black scale bar = 1 centimeter long.
For #MolluscMonday, West Indian fuzzy chiton (Acanthopleura granulata) in rocky intertidal zone on San Salvador Island (The Bahamas 🇧🇸) changing limestone into mud as fecal pellets. Instructions for making mosquito-killing buckets. Cheap, effective, and won't harm butterflies, fireflies, pets, or birds like pyrethroid sprays do. Spring is a great time to set them out. #mosquitoes colinpurrington.com/2024/08/bti-...
The Search for the Perfect Snail Snack
Hawai‘i’s depleted land snails are eking out an existence in human care. Giving them a brighter future means figuring out what they actually want to eat.

A bright yellow roughhead blenny peeks out of a coral head surrounded by algae framed with a dark background.
I found this roughhead blenny sticking out of a coral head in the Bahamas. I really liked the vibrant yellow color.

A photo of an adult antlion atop a wilted yellow flower. The background is fairly dark shrubbery. The insect looks a little like a dragonfly or damselfly, with an elongated abdomen and four long, translucent, many-celled wings held over its back.
Antlion (I think Brachynemurus sp.), Anza-Borrego Desert, CA. These lovely insects resemble dragonflies/damselflies, but are in another order, Neuroptera, with lacewings & owlflies. Larvae & adults are predators. Larvae of this genus live in sand, but don't make the little pitfall traps. #BugSky 🌿🐙
A young corn snake in a desert terrarium loosely coiled like a pretzel among watch-chain crassula
Detail view of the corn snake among, a coral red color interrupted by orbicular white, yellow, and orange spots
Snake in the crass(ula)!
This happened with British relatives that flew into Los Angeles and said they would just catch a cab to Monterey to visit my grandparents. We had to explain it would be very expensive.
I love berbere, I spinkle it on my eggs every morning! I might have to look into this recipe
(Seriously though, this is an incredibly thin pretext for accessing your data. If you got stuck filling out the section on interests and values I’d recommend you take some time to find yourself instead of dating)

I love it when a museum has an exhibit that's just a lil guy
Thought I'd do a thread of some of my favorite #paleoart - inspired by watching an old Skeleton Crew podcast episode

Photographs of a dinosaur-looking bird, the shoebill, and popstar Sabrina Carpenter, overlaid with a height comparison showing both are 152 cm, with visual graphics saying the magazine's name SSWAGGER and some Chinese characters
Photographs of a shoebill and popstar Sabrina Carpenter overlaid with a height comparison showing that, yes indeed, both are just 152 cm
I can't even begin to describe this photograph. I think that might be Taylor Swift on a night out with Sabrina Carpenter. But Sabrina is photoshopped to have a shoebill face and talons, with wing-tips coming out her coat but still Sabrina's hair
Just incredible shoebill awareness-raising from this Hong Kong teens' magazine
Golden rutile with dark green and colorless clinochlore on quartz.. The location given is how Mindat lists it. This is not from the main quartz collecting area but from a small roadcut some distance up the road from the quartz area. These must be etched out of calcite filling the cavities in the rock. Collected by me 8 July 1989.

whitish worm with translucent scales in a shallow cave like opening

A black snake blending in with the bark of a gnarly desert tree. Yellow arrows pointing out the snake are labeled “snake,” “still going,” “more snake,” and “even more” because this thing is ridiculously long. It’s probably a coachwhip but it looks eight feet long to me.
First snake of the year and it’s a doozy!
A roadrunner drew my attention, it was hopping up into the branch and harassing the snake. The snake seems too large to be dinner… perhaps it was wandering too close to a nest.
A bee with its head covered in golden pollen climbing out from an orange globe mallow flower. I’m no expert in bees but I don’t think this the specialized globe mallow bee, they are more squat and pale.
You got a little something on your face
I know he didn’t know I had expertise, but he damn sure assumed I couldn’t possibly.
(while I was mid-sentence), then (4) clearly INFURIATED that they validated my answer, he whipped around in his chair and put his back to me to work on it more.
It required learning a basic formula. Students paired up to do the problem, and the guy I was working with (1) insisted my answer was wrong because it was different from his, (2) glazed over as I tried to guide him to the correct answer, (3) turned to ask the pair next to us what answer they got…
That respect & “willing to learn from her” thing is so true.
I (white woman) shadowed another instructor when I was teaching college (they required it periodically), I just sat in class and pretended to be a student. The prof happened to be teaching one of my favorite subjects to lecture on!…
